Book Review of Dear John by Nicholas Sparks
My Review on "Dear John"
What can I say about this book?..."Dear John" is such a moving story that I could not put it down. I bought the book as a gift for my 16 year old daughter for Christmas. I thought it was a good choice because she loved the "Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks and Channing Tatum was on the cover! So I knew I couldn't go wrong. When I read it for myself, it was the type of book that kept you thinking, even after the last page is turned. It is a story that has so much human compassion and emotion to it, that Nicholas Sparks never fails to create in his books.
Without giving too much away, this story is about John a man raised by a single father, who tried the best that he could for his son. Being a renegade during his teenage years John decides to join the Army after graduation. On one of his visits home he meets Savannah a straight edge college student with an adventurous and caring spirit. From each other they learn that love and acceptance go hand in hand. John goes back to his base station and they plan on marrying and being together for the rest of their lives, but a horrible tragedy strikes and their destinies change. Throughout the years apart they continue to love each other....and in the end heartbreaking decisions are made. John and Savannah learn the true meaning of love through self sacrifice, but also through a life that is saved.
As I mentioned before, this book had me really thinking long after I finished the book. "Dear John" was such a touching story of undying love, self sacrifice and saving grace. The way that Mr. Sparks penned his characters and their lives made me put myself in their shoes...and think "What would I do if I were in their shoes?" I know this book will be a book that I will read over and over for years to come. With the popularity of Nicholas Sparks books, Sony Pictures has made "Dear John" into a movie starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried opening in theaters on Feb. 5th 2010. Check out the trailer for this anticipated movie and I'm sure you will fall in love with this story as much as I have.
