Diamond, listening to the sound of the North Wind.

So you want to encourage your child to read but you are not certain where to start. There are so many books out there but some of the material is hardly suitable. How to find books that really teach a lesson and promote spiritual growth?

I always say, whether adult or child, you should never give or suggest a book to anyone, unless you, yourself have read it. The reason being is that at times books contain certain principles, beliefs or ideas that you do not believe in. A gift represents you and so the book that you give will be a representation of what you believe. That said here is a short list of books which I have read and can attest provide suitable content for children of all ages. Please ensure to read them yourself before giving them as gifts.

Treasures Of the Snow by Patricia St.John

This book is also available as a movie. Both are great. It tells the story of a young girl who has a hatred for her sworn enemy. She learns her lesson about the poison that hate is and she also learns about the love of Jesus.

A Basket of Flowers by Christoph von Schmid

This book tells the tale of a young honest, God-fearing girl who is accused wrongly of theft. But through it all her faith does not waver.

Little Pilgrim's Progress by Helen L. Taylor

This is the same tale of Christian but it has been adapted for children to understand. Christian is now Little Christian and the language has been put into easier terms so that the allegory can be better understood by the little ones.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

A timeless classic that shows the value of values. Book one is a series it is a story of a family who has to do without their father and how they cope with the day to day struggles. The daughters - Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy - are all very different and at the end of this book you find yourself choosing which you liked best and also which of the four girls is most like you. A great book for girls 10 and up.

Total list of series titles:

  • Little Women
  • Good Wives
  • Little Men
  • Jo's Boys
  • Aunt Jo's Scrapbag

Anne Of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Yet another classic that has lessons on vanity, generosity and forgiveness. It is the story of Anne a young girl adopted by a brother and sister and how their lives change because of it. Indeed Anne has an effect on more than Marilla and Matthew in this book. This is book one in the series all of which are good.

Total series list in order:

  • Anne of Green Gables
  • Anne of Avonlea
  • Anne of The Island
  • Anne of Windy Poplars
  • Anne's House of Dreams
  • Anne of Ingleside
  • Rainbow Valley
  • Rilla of Ingleside

At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald

The story of a boy called Diamond whose innocence causes him to see truth. A touching book with little gems that stay with you long after you have read it. I think that this is a great one for parents to read to their children.

Just a few suggestions in case you may be thinking about something suitable to give a child as a gift.

It seems as though more and more children's book are focusing on witchcraft and things to do with the occult, doesn't it? And you are right, when they don't have that the kids in the book are disrespectful to the adults a lot.

I always read a book before I recommend it to children or give it as a gift because you never know what might be in it. It is so good that he likes to read though, so many children do not and I think that is one of the great pities of this 'modern' world we live in.

Thanks for the recommendations. My son is an insatiable reader, he says it is like a sport to him. laugh I am constantly on the lookout for appropriate books. So many contain demons, wizards, magic and other things like poor behavior issues. I will pick up books from your list. We do have some of them already but he is just going into third grade so his interest level is changing although he reads at fifth grade level so I have to be extra careful with content.

      I appreciate your Hub. Hyph
