Born to Die by Lisa Jackson - Review

Updated on October 23, 2014

Dr. Kacey Lambert has often been told that she looks like an actress by the name of Shelly Bonaventure, When she learns of the actress's death she is surprised, though she has never met the star. Only days later a jogger in Grizzly Falls, Montana, is rushed to the ER with fatal injuries from a fall over a cliff. Kacey's colleagues tell her that she bears a strong resemblance to the jogger as well, but Kacey just considers it another accident.

Detective Selena Alvarez of the Pinewood County Sheriff's Department works homicide, with her partner, Regan Pescoli. Selena is not so sure the jogger's fall was an accident. Traces of poison were found in the jogger's blood following her autopsy, but the detectives do not see any motive for murder.

Kacey has begun to make connections in her mind between the lives of these dead women and her own life. They are all about the same age and were born in the same area of Montana. With more deaths of women resemnbling Kacey, she questions her own safety and has nightmares of the time she was attacked in the past.

Then Kacey decides to launch her own investigation into the deaths of these women. She is afraid of what might happen to her, but does not go the the Sheriff's Department because she has no evidence of crimes and they might think she belongs in a mental hospital. The more Kacey digs into the lives of the dead women, the more fearful she becomes that she will be the next to die.

I don't know about you, but I love a mystery novel with such gripping suspense that I can't put it down until I have finished reading it. I also love it when I cannot figure out 'who done it' until I get to the end of the book. Born to Die meets both of these criteria for me. I only recently discovered the novels of Lisa Jackson at my local library, while looking for new authors to explore within the mystery genre. Since I first discovered her books, I have continued to read the author's many captivating mysteries.

Lisa Jackson's writing is very conversational and easy to read. In this novel, she really makes you feel what it's like to live in Grizzly Falls, Montana. She puts you in Kacey's shoes and you are afraid of what may happen to her too! Ms. Jackson sparks your own imagination to explore why so many of Kacey Lambert's 'twins' are dying. With a real sense of suspense, the author leads Kacey and you through the investigation of who may be murdering so many nearly identical women, why it is only women who are dying and what the connections are between the women. The author develops a love interest between Kacey and Trace O'Halleran, a local rancher who also has connections to some of the dead women. You will thoroughly enjoy the tenderness that develops between Kacey, Trace and his son, while also wondering if Trace is involved somehow in the deaths of the Kacey look-alikes.

I hope you enjoy reading Born to Die as much as I did!
