Chuck-Wagon Cookie

Updated on November 18, 2014

By: Wayne Brown

Ol’ Cookie’s got his dutch-oven hanging over the fire-coals red

He’s cookin’ beans, side meat, black coffee, and hot corn bread

That chuck wagon is a welcome sight to pokes at the end of day

Nothin’ like some good hot food except maybe a raise in pay

Them beans has been a-soakin’ and a simmerin’ pert near all day

Cookie says that what makes ‘em good; makes ‘em taste that way

That corn pone with some butter ‘n honey is really a great treat

It’ll go down well with that black coffee and some hot side meat

We’ll fill our bellies with this grub and lick our tin plates clean

Ol’ Cookie will spit and cuss the whole time tryin’ to act so mean

But we know of his big heart and his love of us old cowboys

Taking care and feedin’ us grub is one of his greatest joys

Cookie is a cantankerous cuss, says he got no use for a saddle bum

He can call us anything as long as he cooks grub and gives us some

We’d ride across hell’s half-acre just save his ornery cussin’ neck

Anyone messes with Cookie, well, they’ll answer to us by heck

We’ve lick the old bean pot clean and ate up all the side of meat

Now Cookie brings out an apple pie cobbler; a surprise sweet treat

We’ll eat it too; can’t help ourselves as that aroma pulls us in

Then we’ll sleep it off, work tomorrow, and do this once again

Ol’ Cookie’s got the dirty pot ‘n pans down in the stream to soak

He’s smoking his pipe leaned back against the wagon wheel spoke

Cookie’s got a dream or two still livin’ somewhere in his head

One of these days he’ll chase it too, when he get all us boys all fed.

@bayoulady...mmmm that hot corn bread out of that Dutch oven must have been good. Glad you could make it! WB

@SilverGenes...Thanks much. I wanted to try to create that feel of the chuck wagon. I figured anybody that did that job had to be talented and love it so I set out to paint that picture! Glad you enjoyed it! WB

Now I want to go camping - sigh- and do the dishes in the stream. You conjured up all the sights, sounds and the feeling of living outdoors. Now for a cup of that coffee! Loved it from beginning to end!

Great poem. I felt like I was traveling the trail like on Lonesome Dove, one of my favorite movies.

Loved this poem. Sometimes I think that in a former life I had a covered wagon and cooked up some serious grub for the cowboys.

@CornerStone51...I've seen that guy on the RFD Channel a few years back. He can do just about anything with a Dutch Oven. Thanks for the read! WB

Yup pardner, I can hear the clangin of Cookie's kitchen on wheels as it kicks up the dust and comes to a stop. Out come the pans, fire is started and you can smell those hot biscuits, bacon and beans aroma in the air.

After we just kick back with a our favorite smoke, do some spittin of tabacky, fart into the night and catch our cowboy zzzzzz's while we sleep under the moon and stars and listen to the coyote's howl through the night.

Yup those were the good ole days, when cowboying was fun.
