Call of the Wolf

Updated on November 6, 2010

      Call of the Wolf
Like silent shadows they move
silent and deadly to their prey
traveling miles for a meal
stealthy travelers in a pack
searchng for food for the young

feasting they sate the hunger inside
as dusk settles around the land
they gather to rest in packs
one or two alert while the rest relax
taking turns so all get sleep

once again up and roaming the land
not so silent but still deadly
playfully baying to each other
in choruses primal and ancient
gathering to meet in a clearing

All sitting together male and mate
packs from all over the land
usually enemies now at truce
the old one stalks to the center
raises head and looks around

As the full moon rises and shines down
across the land a silence falls
even the crickets stay their chirps
for one after another young and old
they lift their voices in harmony

to many in the city the sound never heard
to those in the country a voice recalled
sad and mournful to many fearful as well
the howls of loneliness and yearning
is the call of the wolf in chorus

Very nice Wulf - I often used to listen to the coyotes howl their wake up songs and then again the evenings call of the clans when I was on the ranch in WY - wolves have just been reintroduced there but I can imagine that it was very simular. Thanks for bringing the memories of those melodies back for me. Great job.
