Can’t Live Without Your Love

Updated on October 14, 2014

It was the sweetest dream

Sort of like having strawberries and cream

She was there

Just as lovely as all those years ago

Loving him and kissing him

She was his high school sweetheart

All those years ago

Telling him she cared

But choosing to leave him behind

Their romance never made it to university

And he was left haunted

By her memory

As he left his hometown behind

And began a new life

He often wondered where she was

If she still remembered him still

Waking up to a brand new day

He was left haunted by the dream

Wondering if she was thinking of him

Or if she had forgotten about their love

He remembered their senior prom

The last look she gave him

As she crushed his heart

And the rose corsage he had given her

Walking away with the coolest guy

He tried calling the next day

Her parents said she’d gone away

With Nick zooming off on his motorcycle

Leaving everything behind in the dust

He no longer knew who he could trust

Then came the shattering news

That Nick had gone out in a blaze of glory

Flying with his motorcycle

Off of the Golden Gate Bridge

And for a moment he thought

So very scared

That his love had been with him

But they said he’d been alone

Flying high on cocaine

Right then and there

He knew he had to leave California behind

To try to find another love

So it was New York that he chose

Heading across the country

But all he could do in the teeming streets

Was to lose himself

But his dreams remained the same

His fate turned round one day

As he made his way

Through the sun-filled Central Park

A light breeze blew off his cap

And before he knew it

A hand held it out to him

A soft voice said, “Here you go.”

For a moment the world

Spun out of control

It was Laurie the girl from his past

Her face, her eyes, her lips

She was in a wheelchair

And his mind reeled

He saw her bright smile

The way she looked at him

He knew she remembered too

She’d learned the hard way

That life with Nick was a race with death

She’d survived and her parents

Had taken her to New York

Far away from it all

But none of that mattered to him

She was here and very real

He bent down on his knees

Told her he would always love her

And right then and there

They sealed it with at kiss of passion

Together again

United by undying love

Rasma, once again, I am running out of adjectives to describe your beautiful poetry. I only hope that you never run out of time to write them here, on HP, for all of us to share.
