"Caramel Popcorn Power Up" by Eric Wayne Flynn

Updated on January 27, 2014

"Caramel Popcorn Power Up"

When I was eight or so, my brother and I went across the street to my neighbors

Our buddy Jen had a Nintendo and a bunch of different games

We were all playing Mega Man or Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! or something or other

Another boy was there, not sure who he was, can't remember a name or a face

But, I do remember a large tub of caramel popcorn

A, B, A, A, B, A, B equated to a lot of jumping or punching, I can't recall which

But, I do remember a large tub of caramel popcorn

We all dove into the sweet crunch

Then...more jumping or punching, punching or jumping, once again I don't recall

Timeout for another handful

We all continued playing and munching, jumping or punching

The nameless, faceless boy requested more and more popcorn

No one objected, but energy dictated that the nameless, faceless boy explain himself to the group

He claimed "I need it, it gives me a power up to play better"

The rationale didn't make any sense, well not to us at least, but once again no one objected

He continued to dive into the tub, the crunch he made with his mouth annoyed the shit outta me

Damn swine, if we were in a prison camp he'd a eaten more beans, apples, bread or whatever the rations were, would or will be

Not a great general either, we'd a performed a mutiny

Anyways, we were children and it wasn't war or prison

It was a hot summer day in 1987 and we had a big tub of caramel popcorn

Why do I recall such a day of petty insignificance?

Well, he was playing the game at a better clip

I thought maybe he does need it more than I, my brother or Jen

That day I was introduced to the placebo effect

Either that or a natural born bullshitter

In a town north of me, there is a business that draws attention to it's carmel corn by offering it all the time just outside the front door- it's hard to ignore...I love carmel corn; homemade, but this stuff hits the mark for me too!

"... the crunch he made with his mouth annoyed the shit outta me..."

This is very real...I like to take mine to a quiet spot by a lovely water way and grind, I don't like any chances of annoying anyone in this way.

Ah, the militant power of a pop! captured this well.

Somewhat, I mainly think of my brother and how we both had a similar feeling about the situation as youths, truly wasn't a big deal, but it did erk us a bit. We thought, he could just say I want more popcorn.
