Chasing Seagulls...(Barking at the Air)

Updated on June 19, 2012

A Poet...even a "Manly" one....may just be trying to capture a moment...a words. Just like a painter does on canvas.

Welcome to my canvas...

(Scanned pics of old pics of my dogs for this particular writing...will follow...later...for now there is just the poem...and this Texas Beach pic of Seagulls (below) do the talking...)

Chasing Seagulls and Barking at the Air...

Jumping over waves...running without a care.

Alone on the beach...away from the confines of who I regularly am...

Running at the teasing gull at water's edge...flying higher then I can.

Free...we both are for one upon the upon the land.

You see me coming...yet you wait...and fly each time a little bit faster...than how fast I ran.

We play this game...dogs and birds...upon this quiet beach...

Each time landing nearby and taken off a few feet out of my reach.

Why do we chase birds...Why do birds even land close by...?

If I were a bird...I'd land so far couldn't even spot me with an eagle's eye. we play along the water and waves...out...along the endless sand...

No one can figure out the game we play...far out on a long stretch of Tx. Coastal land.

There is no other sounds but waves, some barks, and the cry of the gull...

Endless time...and open sky...put my brain into on automatic lull.

All dogs get to run free...All birds get a chance to try their hand...

At "take-offs" timed just clear a labrador coming at 'em and jumping up... above land.

There is nothing more to bring to the picture...there is only the beach and I...

Pounding with paws against the surf...making each gull...flap their wings to fly.

I don't know why I do this...but it is so much fun...

I love to bark at the gulls...and to try and catch them...on the run.

"Oh...for the dog that is running along without a care...

Chasing Seagulls...And Barking at the Air !"

This poem is inspired by 2 great dogs that were a real treasure to me...and that loved to run along the Beach.

"Bear"- The Black Collie/Lab Mix -"The Teacher". She showed my dog how to go after those darn Seagulls. She meant business!

"Okie"- The Yellow Lab Mix with a touch of Chesapeake Bay Retriever in him - "Mr. Hyper". All he needed was any old excuse to go for a run..or a swim!
