Christmas Poem: Been Away For Long

Updated on November 24, 2016

Mohan is a family physician, film and TV aficionado, a keen bibliophile and an eclectic scribbler.

“Christmas, children, is not a date. It is a state of mind. ”

— Mary Ellen Chase

Tis' the season of reunions

The season of joy and goodwill is also the season of wanting to come home, however long one has been away.

Reunions happen, relationships maybe rekindled.

This song is inspired by all those lost souls who have been away for long.

And the ones who want to return.

Back home. Back to the warmth of being wanted.

Back for Christmas.

“He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree. ”

— Roy L. Smith

Let this Christmas melody play as you read the poem

Been Away For Long

Chill wind it blows

As the world it slows

People hurry past

From its icy blast

Smoke curls to sky

From the chimneys high

My hope slips and glides

Down the frozen slides

Across the street

From the bus stop seat

I watch and wait

Staring at the gate

Snowy branches wave

As the tree stands brave

In the distant yard

And it hits me hard

Lost in mists of night

I’ve been away for long

I’m coming back to light

Where my heart belongs

Will I cross the road

Will I dare this time

Walk up to your door

Press the Christmas chime

Overhead dusk falls

Lonely bird it calls

Shadows stretch and spread

As I fill with dread

Do you think of me

Is there still a we

Have I crossed the line

Have I lost the shine

Is there still a flame

Amongst all the blame

Do you watch sometimes

Forgive me my crimes

I can never stray

Darling far away

As my life line

Is your love line

Lost in mists of night

I’ve been away for long

I’m coming back to light

Where my heart belongs

Will I cross the road

Will I dare this time

Walk up to your door

Press the Christmas chime

Christmas songs they play

All through every day

And the windows gleam

Silver golden dreams

Thousand lights they shine

As the cold hearts pine

For warmth of love

From the one above

Children laugh and flee

From the Christmas tree

Clutching gifts of joy

Every girl and boy

Tis’ the season of cheer

To be loved and near

Tis’ the season to be

Tis’ the season to see

Lost in mists of night

I’ve been away for long

I’m coming back to light

Where my heart belongs

Will I cross the road

Will I dare this time

Walk up to your door

Press the Christmas chime....

Will I cross the road

Will I dare this time

Walk up to your door

Press the Christmas chime....

"Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect."

I've returned to view your video and read your beautiful poem another time. It's mid-December, and I know you're teaching a medical course in Thailand now. I hope you'll return to the UK in time to celebrate Christmas with your family.

There is calm gentleness to this lovely hub that brings the spirit of Christmas so much closer. I can see the quiet lights, and feel the warmth of the season as we dream of snowdrifts and crunchy white tingles, and treasured moments with loved ones as I wait for them to pull into our driveway. :-) Beautifully, done. Doc. Up plus much more.

A gorgeous, flattering poem to read and be delighted by the thoughts of memories. I thought of many people I will miss during this loving time of year. That yearned for moment, just an additional second to see them walk through the treshold or come driving up the driveway. Such a nice place you shared with us to go. Thank you.
