Clash of Kings Game of Thrones

Updated on January 6, 2014

Clash Of Kings

HBO Series Game of Thrones Books Clash of Kings

If you are a fan of the HBO series, "A Game of Thrones" then the book, "A Clash of Kings" should definitely be on your radar. It is the second book in George RR Martin's fantastic series, "a song of ice and fire". the storyline takes up right where the game thrones ends. In fact that begins the same exact day is the ending.

This story is even better than game of thrones. There is more plotting and ruthless backstabbing as the land of Westoros begins to be plunged into of violent civil war following the end of the actions that happened in the previous novel. It is rare the second novel is actually better than the first. But Martin seems to do it. In fact the next book in the series, "A Storm of Swords" is even better than this one. Minor characters to come majorly important as older characters are killed off or changed.

One thing is definitely true about Martin's novels. Absolutely no character is safe. This brings a sense of thrill and excitement every page. When your favorite character is in dire peril, you know the peril is really and truly dire, because Martin can, will and has killed off major characters.

Read the next Module for a Game of Thrones Summary of Clash of Kings but be warned, while I will avoid mentioning major plot twists, some can be inferred.

Game of Thrones Summary Clash of Kings

Spoilers may Occur

Beware: Some spoilers may lie within.

Clash of Kings begins where Game of Thrones ends. Civil war has come to Westeros and the Seven kingdoms.

After the actions that ended the Game of Thrones, many of the powerful lords have declared themselves either King of their own land or have claimed kinship of the whole of Westeros. Both Renly Baratheon and Stannis Baratheon brothers of late King Robert have declared themselves to be the rightful heir to their deceased brother. Each one has his own group of loyal followers. Roberts son Joffrey also declares his kingship, although some know the history parentage is in question.

Then in the North the Starks of Winterfell declare themselves Lords of the North and fight to secede from the union that is Westeros. To further complicate the issues Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands has also declared itself independent and proceeds to have his ships attack and pillage villages up and down the coast.

Bran finds himself in charge of Winterfell and meets some interesting new friends. Bran also begins to have strange dreams and slowly develops some sort of, "power". Winterfell is ultimately taken by a bold move from Greyjoy and Bran and a few friends narrowly escape.

Tyrion Lannister makes his way back to King;s Landing and is given the job of being Joffreys "hand of the King" and protecting Kings Landing from both Stannis and Renly's armies.

Arya pretends to be a young boy called Arry, in an attempt to evade capture by the people who wish to control the daughter of Eddard Stark. her travels begin to lead her away from Kings Landing to a fortress called, "Harrenhal" where things begin to go from bad to worse..

At "the Wall" things are starting to progress. "Wilding" attacks are becoming more frequent, and the members of the night watch including Jon Snow begin to realize that there is something, "pushing" frequency of these attack's. Ultimately Snow goes, "undercover" with the wildings in a bold maneuver.

Daenarys in the East is working to build herself a coalition to recapture Westeros. But with a few followers begins to have other issues with many of the powerful leaders of the eastern lands. These issues make her begin consolidate her own power is slowly becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Ultimately in the climatic finish of the novel the opposing forces attack Kings Landing and are only thwarted through the ingenuity, cunning and deft political maneuvering of Tyrion.'s. The end of this novel is seriously the best "siege" story ever written

It is hard to ask for more from the casting of game of thrones. The producers did a wonderful job of picking out a superb cast. Clash of Kings

The books that comprise the series that began with, "Game of Thrones" are all excellent and high quality novels. They do tell a tightly interwoven stories that builds as the novel progresses. Therefore is important to start with the first one and work your way through. Since it appears that the first series will be fairly close to the first book it is feasible to watch the first season and then begin reading Clash of Kings, but the series so good your best bet is honestly to buy the whole series. Even after reading the series 3 complete times, I still find little things I missed.

Game of Thrones HBO Television show

The Game of Thrones television show is currently filming it's second season.

The second season will follow the story line of this book, "The Clash of Kings". HBO has already stated that the series will only be 10 episodes long to spite the fact that the extra book has over 100 pages. So imagine that some of the content may end up on the editing floor and some of it may be pushed back to the third season (if there is a third season).

The next book A Storm of Swords, will almost certainly have to be cut into two seasons, since it adds about 300 plus pages on top of what happens in the first book, and contains some of the most thrilling scenes of the series. (If you think the death near the end of the first was a shocker, just wait for season 3-4)
