Clouds of the Soul

Updated on March 3, 2011

It has taken me years to realize that the past and the future are but mere illusions...over which I have absolutely no control. I have lost many golden opportunities while entertaining regret and fear... playing the "if only"... and "what if" games in my head... The only thing I have control of is my NOW...if I choose to seize it.

"if only" and "what if"
are clouds of the soul
that shadow the present
with threats of control.
opportunities vanish,
hope appears lost.
such empty desires
don’t merit the cost.
"what ifs" and "if onlys"
Lay forfeit the now,
the most valuable gift
that Time can endow.
Life is too short
To waste time at hand
chasing illusions
but drawn in the sand.

A powerful message, Marsha, I am so stuck with those chains of 'what if' and 'if only'... they are clutching me tight like there is no tomorrow...

"But even now it is manifest and clear that there are neither times future nor times past.

Thus it is not properly said that there are three times, past, present, and future.

Perhaps it might be said rightly that there are three times: a time present of things past; a time present of things

present; and a time present of things future. For these three do coexist somehow in the soul,

for otherwise I could not see them. The time present of things past is memory; the time present of things present

is direct experience; the time present of things future is expectation. If we are allowed to speak of these

things so, I see three times, and I grant that there are three.

Let it still be said, then, as our misapplied custom has it:

"There are three times, past, present, and future." I shall not be troubled by it, nor argue, nor object--always provided that what is said is understood,

so that neither the future nor the past is said to exist now.

There are but few things about which we speak properly--and many more about which we speak

      improperly--though we understand one another's meaning. "

Spirit Whisperer, Thank you for the read, and the lovely comment. These little messages in poetic form seem to be God's lessons that I need to hear, when they present. It is a joy to share them.

I heard a song years ago called "No Expectations" and the seed was planted to not take life so seriously. I try to live every day without much worry, things always work out. Good hub! Peace!! Tom

cracked, this is a message i need to hear as is just too easy to let the "now" slip through one's fingers while toying with regrets of the past or fears of the future...thanks for the read and feedback!

Meaningful poem with a clear message My dear !

Thanks for sharing this and letting all those

(including me) who clutch the past too tightly know that its better to concentrate on the present rather than 'wat ifs' and 'if onlys' of the past..
