Coming Out of the Rain

Updated on July 31, 2015

Another rainy New York City day

with neon shimmers

making puddles shine

cars splashing muddy water

and the rivers murky and gray

no fun on a rainy day in New York

when this city doesn’t shine

its thousands of windows

like unseeing eyes

dark and unresponsive

and so drawing up his jacket collar

head bent low

he tried to imagine

that magic of the reflection

of so many shimmering puddles

flashing neon signs

in a gray world

that wasn’t any fun until the day

gave way to the dark

and the night people came out to play

as the rain came down heavy

he was thinking of ducking

into a bar

when the rain like a curtain parted

and out of the rain she came

like an angel from another world

this beauty looked so fresh and untouched

even though she seemed to love the rain

dripping wet and smiling

it so became her

in astonishment he stood

and wondered if it was the New York City myth

that had him so very stunned

he smiled, she smiled

and suddenly the city smiled

no words were needed

they were two souls

refreshed by the rain

on the streets of New York

and the colorful puddles

no longer reflected neon

instead they glittered like jewels

they grasped hands

and like in so many stories

and New York has a million of them

together they went dancing in the rain

tripping the light fantastic

from river to river

until a rainbow appeared

all the windows

glowing like orange fire

in the setting sun

the city now beaming

on their new found love

      "its thousands of windows

      like unseeing eyes

      dark and unresponsive..."

Yet even in New York, love can bloom and open the eyes to life that takes on a new promise...when those windows "glowing like orange fire..."

      Just beautiful, Rasma! :-)

I enjoyed this poem very much for its fresh imagery and high romance.

Love the Eurythmics and of course your way of writing a story in a poetic and romantic way.

      Love from the sky~

Hope you both are having a great weekend. Blessings.

Thank you Ann. It is rather magical as the rain puddles shimmer in different colors in the rain in NYC.

Thank you Faith. My memories are of this but I never found romance in the rain in NYC but loved the way all those puddles shinned in different colors.

Oh, Gypsy, this is certainly a beautifully written poem with such a mesmerizing storyline. This may be my new favorite of your poems. You have captured the sights of NY in the rain so well and then to beautifully tell of that instant attraction.

      Up and more and away

Great imagery and a wonderful story within the scenes of New York in the rain. You created atmosphere, scenery and effectively portrayed how a scene can change when we have a different perspective. Brilliant!

Hope you're all having a great weekend.

Thank you Bill. Have walked the rainy streets enough myself to make the memories stay in my mind.

      Thank you Shauna.

Thank you Missy Smith. Have walked those rainy streets but alas for me I never found romance. I do remember that in the rain in NYC the neon especially sparkles in the rain puddles.

      Thank you Ruby.

      Thank you Vellur.

      Thank you Jodah.

Best to visit in the sunshine Mary but NYC does offer some kind of magic even in the rain. Hope at least you got some good out of NYC.

Although I have never been to New York City, I've seen many movies and pictures and heard it described many times. You did an excellent job describing the feeling you could get in New York. I like that you turned into a positive by making it a love story with a happy ending. It reminded me of that move, "Serendipity." Very Nice! :)

Beautiful love story, Rasma. I love the way the entire city and the weather were affected by the love these two strangers came to share.

The story was enjoyable as always, but I really liked the opening and your description of New York in the rain. Well done!
