The Challenge

Genna East, in her wonderful hub "The Encounter - A Writing Challenge" issued the following challenge:

"How would you perceive an encounter with extraterrestrials coming to earth? Would their intent be peace, discovery and enlightenment, or conquest and annihilation? How would we receive them and attempt to communicate? Do you agree with physicist, Stephen Hawking, in that the METI project (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence) involved in sending signals into space so that extra-terrestrials can pick them up will put us in grave danger? The challenge -- should you decide to accept it -- is to write a story about such an alien-encounter."

You can check out the rules and guidelines by reading Genna's hub. This is my response to that challenge, an Acrostic Free Verse Poem..

The Coming of the Ark - Reason to Be Worried

From Genesis Chapter 6 (New Revised Standard Version) :

5) The Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually. 6) And the Lord was sorry that he had made humankind on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7) So the Lord said, ‘I will blot out from the earth the human beings I have created — people together with animals and creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.’ 8) But Noah found favour in the sight of the Lord.

Contact With the Jatites

Communication with the Ark

Orbiting the Planet Earth

Now has finally been achieved.

The occupants are called Jatites.

Astronomers confirm these extraterrestrials

Come from the exo-planet Jate 22C,

Terrestrial atmosphere similar to Earth,

Within three light years from our solar system.

It is apparent from initial contact

That CO2 emissions on Jate 22C

Had exceeded critical mass.

The planet was becoming unlivable forcing the Jatites to seek

Habitable planets with similar atmospheric conditions.

Exotic matter use enabled alteration of the speed of light surrounding the craft.

Jatite commanders ensure us they come in peace,

Although NASA has reservations and remains cautious,

Treating the Arks presence as a potential threat to mankind.

Invasion is an imminent possibility in an attempt to take over the Earth.

Taking all necessary precautions and preparing the military and airforce.

Evacuation procedures will soon be put in place in all major cities

Should an actual threat be issued or eventuate.

That was really fun. It made me wonder, if they do come, perhaps they would communicate with dogs rather than humans.

You are so talented, my friend. Great read, great response to the challenge, no surprise at all for those of us who follow you.

It wouldn't surprise me, Eric. They could have read our METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence) signals and interpreted the word "God" incorrectly as "Dog." Thanks for your comment as always. Have a great day.

Thanks Bill, though this wasn't exactly the response I wanted to do. I was hoping to do some flash fiction but can't get out of the poetry mode at the moment :) Genna wanted me to draw some illustrations but at present I haven't been able to come up with any. Maybe I'll add some later on.

John, I am glad you chose to do poetry, that is my favorite from you because you are so good at it.

I want to join the fun with this one, but I need to go outside with the pooper scooper so the aliens will have a clean landing incase it is Chipper they want to communicate with. I have to clean without Chipper he wants to chase the pooper scooper and the rake and everything else that I use to clean up.

      Blessings to you my friend.

Hell John, this is sooo well done. I am amazed at your ability to do this type of poetry. It must be difficult, yet fun to write. This was so much fun. I hope others will join in. I hope Mike and Bill will write their version, and of course, I hope Mike will go political. lol.

John, I just love this! It is so clever and creative, with a unique perspective. And the sci-fi short video was perfect. What fun. :-)

Really super duper, John. I love sci-fi, and you "outdone yoreself" on this one. I hope they come in friendship. Really now, some dyslexic aliens who connect with our Dogs. I love it!

Hey MizB, thanks for visiting. Yes, hopefully they came in peace and just want to share our planet and introduce some new species amongst our present ones.

Thanks Genna. If I had more spare time I may have tried to develop the story around the Ark more etc but I think I managed to get my idea across. So glad you loved it and the video. It was a fun challenge and I can't wait for o read the other contributions.

Thank you, Ruby. Yes acrostic does take a bit more thought than a normal poem as you are restricted by the first letter of each line but I enjoy the challenge. I can't wait for the responses of others as well.

Hi John, you have come up with such a creative response to Genna's interesting challenge. I love it! This challenge is so unique and Genna certainly has written a fantastic background story from which all to jump off.

Finally I get to read the other participant's stories. I got part one of three up. Wow, after reading yours and Writing mine, I'm beginning to think we might want to unplug SETI and METI. Just let everyone go on their happy way wherever in the universe they are. Great job, John. I enjoyed it.

This acrostic was a very creative answer to the challenge. It must take quite some work to get things so succinct to fit the way they do. I'm laughing at Ruby's comment.

Hi Flourish. I appreciate your comment. I find acrostics either work or they don't. This one flowed reasonably easily thankfully.

      Yes, Ruby's was funny.
