How To Fill in a Google DMCA Complaint

Some of my Articles were Stolen

I was very annoyed at the situation but I followed advice and got it sorted

I reported these thieves to the host websites. I also did the same to Google with a DMCA Form and they were taken down.

A Google DMCA Complaint

Report and Remove Stolen Articles with a Google DMCA Complaint. I became complacent and had not checked for stolen articles since before December last year.

I decided I had better check to make sure no one had stolen any of my articles lately. Was I in for a very nasty surprise! There were many of my articles online that had been blatantly copied onto other blogs and websites.

These people were even too lazy to take off my HubPages user name and Score which had been copied too. One person had the utter cheek to include my copyright notice at the bottom of my article with the date and my name. At the top of this very same article she had her name as the author!

My Writing had been Stolen

I have written comments on these sites to the effect that the article in question was mine and had been stolen. I have also emailed the administrators of the site to the same effect and the so called author too. And of course I reported them all to Google with a DMCA form. .

I am still waiting for these articles to be removed and as each day goes by I am getting more frustrated and annoyed. One of my hubs is about setting up a blog. This was stolen on the 20th December 2011 when it was getting a lot of daily traffic and had a score of 97.

Because I did not check for stolen articles until last week I have lost all that revenue. I realise this is my own fault but really I hate being in a negative mode and expecting other people to be so nasty and dishonest.

Reporting Sites that have Stolen your Articles

I know the world has dishonest and evil people in it who continually create nastiness and seem to get away with it but this has really upset and angered me.

Let’s fight these Content Thieves

I feel better now after giving myself a good talking to and decided I will fight these content thieves. But to be honest it is very hard when I see all my work of days and weeks writing, researching and editing my hubs go to waste.

It took a while but I realised that if I gave up writing articles online then I would be playing in to the hands of these people. Rather than sit here and be depressed and give up doing something that I love I decided on a plan of action.

The best thing to do would be to try to make our articles on HubPages safer from theft.

Have you had any of your hubs stolen?

See results

Did you find it hard to get your stolen article removed?

See results

HubPages Duplicate Content Warning

I understood that if there was a copy of our work on the internet then we would receive a Duplicate Content warning from the Hubpages Staff that this was the case.

This has either been withdrawn or is not working as well as it should be. One of my hubs was copied completely including my Hubpages user name, score, photos, videos and copyright statement at the end.

And other hubs have also been stolen. Why were these not flagged on my account as duplicate content?

It is so demoralizing when I think that the world is full of scumbags like this. But what is worse is the fact they are getting away with it.

I admit I have been complacent and lazy in keeping up to date with my hubs. I should have made it my business to check on a regular basis to see if my hubs were copied and out there somewhere else.

So I have come up with a poll to see if there is enough hubbers who would agree with me about a way to stop making it easier for these thieves to copy our work on the HubPages writing site.

Would you like HubPages to make your hubs Read only so that no one can copy and paste your hubs?

See results

HubPages Suggestion and Poll

These people are pure lazy and thieves. My whole articles were copied in full and added to their own blogs and sites.

If these thieves were not able to do this then it would stop a lot of content theft straight away.

Would HubPages not be able to activate some kind of software that will stop anyone from being able to copy and paste any hub that has been published on their writing site?

Now the software needed to do this may be too expensive or hard to implement. But there is no harm in making the suggestion to HubPages.

Yes I know writers here would also be unable to copy and paste the hub too. But that would only be from the public page.

If writers wanted to copy and paste their full article for storage purposes then they can still do this when they go in to the EDIT mode of their hub.

If the article thieves could not copy and paste in full and have to actually copy the hub by typing all the text then I can assure you that a lot of hubs would be protected from content theft!

I would appreciate it if all you readers could take the poll and share this hub with your own followers. That way I will get a better idea of how many writers agree with me about stopping the copy and paste facility here on HubPages to outside readers.

How to File a DMCA Complaint Form

HubPages Learning Center have also created an excellent article about how to go about getting your stolen articles removed from these other blogs and websites.

They go into detail about what you can do and explain how to fill in this complaint form. They have also given a direct link on this hub if you find that another hubber has stolen your work. Yes it happens. There is an example of one such incident explained in the forum.

This was a person who had already stolen lots of hubs for his blogs and websites and then joined up to HubPages. He was quickly banned.

I have a question for you what if it is my hub and I sell the item that the hub is about on ebay why does my hub come up as dupilcate? How can I fix it? I post a link from my ebay to my hub page. Great hub I hope you get your problem straight.

    • viking305 profile image

L M Reid 5 years ago from Ireland

I am not too sure what you mean about ebay.

If you have received a Duplicate warning from HubPages then they also give you a link as to where the article is also posted.

If you posted some of the text from your own hub on to the eBay site then you have duplicated your own article and HubPages does not allow that.

What you can do in a case like that it write a summary of the hub on eBay with a link to the original hub. The easiest way to write a new and original summary is to imagine that you are telling a friend what your hub is about. That way you should have the keywords but very little of the same text.

If someone has stolen your hub then I have included two links in the above article that explains how to go about having the stolen hub removed.

      I hope this helps.

Thanks for reading and taking the time to answer the Poll

What!?!?! Somebody might steal my HUBS/!?!?! This was an eye opener for me.

I found I enjoyed this very much. You have this laid out beautifully and it is easy to understand. Keep up the great HUBS. I must give this an “Up ONE and awesome.” I'm always your fan! RJ

Based upon your HUB, you might enjoy this HUB written today…

There is nothing that HubPages can do to stop copying. You have to understand that for me to read this page at all, it has already been copied to my computer.

I use Copyscape to find theft. They are reasonably priced (free if you'll put up with some clumsiness) and quite accurate.

    • viking305 profile image

Thank you Reynold Jay and The Finance Hub for reading and taking the time to comment.

Pcunix. I know once we publish here on HubPages or anywhere on the internet it is an invitation to content theft. But I was hoping that maybe HubPages could make it harder for those to steal our work by disabling the copy and paste facility.

I have seen this done on other sites. At least those who are too lazy to actually write out our text would be stopped. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment

    • Pcunix profile image

I would protest that it is a bad idea. People often want to copy a few sentences when making a link, for example.

It would not stop content theft and would annoy legitimate usage.

    • viking305 profile image

L M Reid 5 years ago from Ireland

Pcunix Yes you make a fair point.

But I personally would rather see a few people annoyed than my best earning hubs stolen by these thieves.

If stopping the copy and paste facility does not as you say stop content theft then maybe other readers might be able to come up with a better idea than mine.

Anything to stop all the hard work of online writers from being undermined.

      Thanks for your comment

I have no doubt people will come up with "ideas". None of them can work, ever.

This is a dead horse. There is no technology that can prevent content theft.

    • viking305 profile image

L M Reid 5 years ago from Ireland

That is very depressing news. Maybe someone will invent the perfect technology soon, they would make a fortune!

I use Copyscape too to detect theft but have been amiss lately in checking my articles online. But not anymore. I successfully had 3 of my stolen hubs taken down yesterday that I found the other day.

Looks like I will have to keep watching out for copied hubs of mine. Hate to think of these rotten thieves getting away with it

Patsybell I am sorry to hear that lots of your photos have been stolen. It is really sickening when you find this has happened. I hope you manage to get them taken down.

suziecat7 I am sorry to hear that. Did you not get any results by reporting the content theft of your hub to Google?

If you can leave a comment on the stolen article then do so too. I did that last year on one of my hubs to the effect that 'This article has been stolen and it belongs to me. TAKE IT DOWN -- You have been reported'

That has worked for me a few times.

    • suziecat7 profile image

suziecat7 5 years ago from Asheville, NC

Viking - I've done the same with good results. But this particular thief is in Saudi Arabia and couldn't care less what I say or threaten or do. The language in the blog for the most part is Arabic with the exception of a few articles including mine.

    • viking305 profile image

L M Reid 5 years ago from Ireland

Suzie I suppose these people couldn't care less as you say because they have no morals! Very annoying and frustrating.

When I found all my stolen hubs last week it really did depress me and nearly put me off writing online. But then these thieves would have won.

What can we do but carry on and try to catch and report as many as we can.

I'm so sick and tired of content thieves! Some of my hubs have been stolen and I didn't know about this for almost a week. I guess I also felt demoralized when I found about it this morning. It's so frustrating. I'm off to send a DCMA notification. It's like it only gets worse with time - the more hubs you publish, the more the chances of them getting stolen. But we shouldn't let that get to us!

How do you find stolen content?

    • viking305 profile image

L M Reid 5 years ago from Ireland

Thank you everyone for taking the time to leave a comment and for sharing.

jellygator and GoGreenTips, To see if your hub has been stolen there are a few ways. You can use Copyscape free but they only allow you to search a few times a month for nothing. Five a month I think.

Or you can do each hub manually. Copy your first paragraph and then paste this in to the Google search engine.

Only your hub should be there, if you see other Urls with your words you will know it has been copied.

Click on that link and your hub will appear under someone else's name! Most thieves are too lazy to change a single word and your hub will be there exactly how you wrote it and with your photos and even the videos you added.

How often should you check for stolen content? As often as you can.

Then follow the instructions for reporting your stolen article that 'writerfox' has given in his excellent hub called 'Stolen Content'. There is a link in this hub above.

It is so depressing to find one of your hubs stolen, it makes me very angry when it happens! But I am afraid that there isn't so much that can be done to prevent it, we will just have to check regularly. It is a time consuming and takes time from writing and reading so I don't check so often as I should. This is a great article with good information that is very helpful!

Thanks viking! I checked out my articles and found one was copied. I have been handling it with the person who copied and pasted it to their blog and am hopeful it will be resolved without intervention. He has responded to my contact and I am monitoring to be sure he corrects the situation. You can check out how I chose to handle it by viewing the comments on my article on how to plan a vegetable garden. That is where he responded to my demand for him to remove it from his site. I'm not putting a link here as that seems like it would be taking advantage of your fine article. :-) Thanks again for writing it. It helped me discover this situation.

Hello Susie, sorry to hear you had one of your articles stolen but it is best to find them asap. I read the comment on your gardening article to the thief and it was very professional and polite. Let's hope he removes your stolen article very soon.

English does not seem to be his first language so maybe it might be better if he is stalling that you send him your own unique paragraph describing your article with the link to Hubpages. Hope it is sorted for you soon.

If not I would be more aggressive with him and threaten to report him to Google. That usually does the trick!

It IS so frustrating, and it's running rampant right now. I have probably 100 or so I'm estimating that I'll have to file complaints on. I wish there were somehow more strict restrictions to keep people from stealing and easier ways for the authors to stop them. Not only should their sites be taken down; they should be prosecuted. It makes me so angry. Filing DMCA complaints is what I'll be doing off and on for the next few days until I report all those bloodsuckers. :-) Okay, nuff said. Thanks for this hub. The link on how to file a complaint will be very helpful to many people, so I'm sharing this hub.

Viking, thank you so much for writing this hub. I do have some stolen material and at least one full article complete with title and images I used. The person who stole it got some raving comments and sits back to eat up the praise on what I wrote. In my article, I explained in detail and prose how I sat on my patio one morning and gazed at a constellation in the southeast and then wrote about the legends and lore of that constellation. I could not believe that this woman not only stole my work, but claimed to have been the one sitting on the patio -- in other words, she blatantly impersonated me! It is outrageous that people have the nerve, the audacity, to do these kind of things. She also is receiving residual income on my article!

Anyway, I am taking steps to expose her and get my rights and my article back. I will follow your advice and take it to Google for further action -- wish me luck.

Again, thank you ever so much, Viking. Slainte and good health to you.

I think that it awful however that people could do such a thing because there are millions of things a person could write about. With HubPages we are allowed to pretty much write about what we want. Another thing is that Google looks for original and different content. When people wonder why their Hubs don't get the visibility in Google's search engine this may be why because what people don't know is that Google automatically looks for copied material. If the system suspects that the work is not original then it won't rank high in their search engine and everybody knows that the more traffic a person has means more money! In the end that person loses!

I have spent so many hours hunting down my work. These thieves are mostly in other countries and know how to hide. I had to look under the reader view i installed on Firefox to see what copyscape and Hp staff was reporting.

Google and the web hosts have lately told me that they cannot see what I am reporting. Unbelievable! They are the experts and they can't find it?!

The other issue is even if the articles and blogs are de-indexed, these bastards just find another host and change the titles.
