Couponing We Will Go

Updated on December 21, 2012

Save Save Save

My mom loved her coupons and I was her side kick

I had an important job to the read the dates and to see if the coupons had expired

Then to hold the ones that we would use

Little did I know this was my first business venture that I would show a profit

Coupons were in the Sunday papers and we cut them out regularly

We would separate them into piles and put them neatly into a coupon file folder

Where the coupons were organized into categories to make them easy to find

One of my many jobs was to help cut them out and share in the excitement

Once in awhile we would find a 75 cent coupon and that was rare

Mostly you found 20 and 30 cent coupons

The expiration dates were very important

After all the effort of cutting the coupon out and organizing it just so

We had to make sure to use it or lose it

Week after week we would sort through

Bringing the coupons to the front with the dates almost due

The savings was important on items that we needed

Money well spent better in our pocket than in theirs

I remember holding the coupons in my hand tight

Waiting for the right moment to give them to the cashier

Once and awhile loosing a couple my mother would complain

I know we had one where did it go

You have to be more careful

We just through away money

The lady behind the register would put them in a pile in front of her and with a sigh

I often wondered what she was thinking

You will never know how much this makes my job so much harder

Then came judgement time

Where she would ring in each coupon one at a time

We would wait to see the total get lowered by sometimes eight dollars or more

That was a score

I remember the person behind us waiting impatiently

Sometimes they said wow you saved alot good job

We heard of coupon clubs that saved a bundle

Rumors that they saved half or the entire grocery bill

How they did it I will never know

We also would dream but the truth is we couldn't afford to buy everything

We had to pick and chose

Later some places like Stop and Shop offered double on all your coupons

That was exciting but usually the price for each item was higher and sometimes it wasn't a deal

I remember I had thought of an idea to make things easier

I would take a marker and in big numbers put on the back the date of each coupon

If it was March 10,1978

I would put on the back 3/10 with a bold black marker

Easy to spot each coupon before it expired by looking at the backs of every coupon first

Then we decided to use it or not

The big 50 and 75 cent coupons were great coupons when they were doubled

Up to 99 cents so other coupons that read a dollar off where good but you got a better deal if you could use the 75 cent one and save one dollar and fifty cents

Those were the days where saving a couple of dollars meant alot

With the extra money we saved we could buy a box of sugar cereal that we normally wouldn't get

There was always too many coupons on house cleaners and diapers we didn't need

I remember my uncle and my mom using coupons alot

There were times when the bagger would go through your bags to make sure you had the item for the coupn you wanted to use

Other times the check out girl would let you know this coupon is no good it is expired

We would say oh I didn't know

My uncle would throw a couple of extra coupons in on different items he didn't get or ones that expired

Hoping the lady wouldn't check and the store got their money any way

This was before the scanners came in and everything changed

They would scan all the coupons and if it wasn't on the register receipt it would beep

Once in a blue moon a coupon didn't ring in correctly but most of the time they caught you dead to rights

Those were the days when a was just a young boy

I can remember both our eyes light up like Christmas lights when we saved alot

Saving money was possible with some effort and time

I never thought of it as work

Bringing back old memories of mom and me was fun

For all you mothers out there

Who were known as Coupon Queens who have saved a bundle

If you have a story I would love to hear it

Then you can tell us how much you saved and where

Unfortunately we have a really to almost nonexistent coupon system this side of the world. However I do remember when I lived in NYC and my mom and I went grocery shopping we always has lots of coupons. There were times we could even save between $30 - $50.

kj force If my father did the shopping he wouldn't use coupons either. He liked to hear how much we saved. But he always followed it with yeah but how much did you spend. It is funny hearing stories how so many other people did the same thing.I ddin't know that American soldiers families can use the expired coupons. Why don't they advertise that.I am sure more people would send them to them.I will go looking first then I might still need your help.Great advice and loved your stories too.
