Creative Thinking

Creative think or thinking creatively, simply put is opening your mind to new ideas and ways of using them. Most people put it in terms of "Thinking outside of the box".

So, why is it so important? For a writer it is critical to be able to think of new ideas in time and space. Being unable to think creatively and put your thoughts into words is the most basic tool a writer or an artist needs.

It is a little harder for some than for others to let their mind walk into the world of imagination. I find that watching a show or movie and think of how you would change it to make it more interesting or to another genre. For instance, if you were watching an adventure show how would you add things to make it more of a sci-fy.

I also find when reading a book it is always a good exercise to change things in your mind as you read it. It will get your creative juices flowing.

We all have an inner child, someone inside us that loves to play and make up stories. Let that inner child come out it and play. Let it show you how easy and how much fun it can be to create.

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. ~ Scott Adams

Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn't really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That's because they were able to connect experiences they've had and synthesize new things. ~ Steve Jobs

A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others. ~ Ayn Rand

Creativity is a great motivator because it makes people interested in what they are doing. Creativity gives hope that there can be a worthwhile idea. Creativity gives the possibility of some sort of achievement to everyone. Creativity makes life more fun and more interesting. ~ Edward de Bono

Creativity is more than just being different. Anybody can plan weird; that's easy. What's hard is to be as simple as Bach. Making the simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity. ~ Charles Mingus

If you don't have the time to read, you don't have the time or the tools to write. ~ Stephen King

Creativity isn’t about wild talent as much as it’s about productivity. To find new ideas that work, you need to try a lot that don’t. It’s a pure numbers game. ~ Robert Sutton

Creativity is a drug I cannot live without. ~ Cecil B. DeMille

When I open my eyes in the morning, I am not confronted by the world, but by a million possible worlds. ~ Colin Wilson

The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover is yourself. ~ Alan Alda

To me, the greatest pleasure of writing is not what it's about, but the inner music the words make. ~ Truman Capote

Tips to help you write creatively

Whatever kind of writing you are involved in, you know you need to be writing creatively. Sometimes it is hard to get yourself on track. Your ideas seem to get stuck somewhere between the thought and putting the down. Relax, we all go through this process. I am includeding some tips and suggestions to get that creative thought process going.

  • First and foremost, relax. Nobody can create when they are putting themselves under a tremendous amount of pressure. Sit back, take a deep breath and let your mind wander. Don't try to structure your thoughts, let them come naturally.
  • Sit down at your computer and type in random thought. They don't have to make sense, they may spark an idea when you read them later.
  • Make sure you keep a copy or journal of your random thoughts. Many times they can develop into a wonderfully creative article that you may not have thought of.
  • Read everything you can get your hands on. Something you read may spark an awesome idea. Many times you will read something that is new to you that gives you just that little spark of an idea that becomes that special article.
  • When you do come up with an idea make sure you convey passion for the subject. People can tell when you are just going through the motions.
  • Include emotion in your writing. It will make your article appeal to your reader.
  • Use figurative language when writing. Similies and metaphors add interest to your piece and the way you describe people and objects. Hyperbole and personification also will add a personality to your writing.
  • Use all of your senses when writing. Smell "The delicious aroma wafed through the air to tickled the nose". Taste: "The taste of the milk was so sour that it turned her stomach".
  • Show your writing to someone whose opinion you value. Get feedback, they make pick up on something you missed.
  • Edit, edit, edit. I can't impress enough how important this step is. You can lose a reader because of incorrect grammer or spelling.

Good luck.

This is so motivational and I've marked it for future reference. I love the quotes and your tips. It's so true that inspiration is all around us, we just need to open our eyes and pay attention. I like the quote that creativity is making mistakes and art is knowing which ones to keep. : )

hawaiianodysseus, we all need to create in our own way. I myself am unorganized at times. I like the ebb and flow of creativity. As for communing with God I also find the thought process is the best communication, you are more yourself.

I love this piece! Thank you for sharing. I'm blessed to be a follower.

Just an idea or two that I'd like to share with you. 99% of the time, I'm a very unorganized writer. I don't know if it's my firstborn child placement among my siblings and the constant haranguing from my parents while growing up to be responsible for my brothers and sisters that I'm rebelling from in my old age...or whatever the cause...but I write kinda like on automatic pilot.

My creativity needs to flow. Sure, I'll go back and correct my spelling, take out unnecessary plurals, and do the grammatical check process, etc., but I write my hubs just like I write my comments to the talented writers I follow.

I love the process of creativity. It's the closest thing to communion with the Great Creator Himself, sometimes--in my oddball way of thinking--better than traditional prayer.

Thanks for writing this beautiful piece, KoffeeKlatch Gals!

All of these ideas are just great and beneficial for writers. The one that has helped me the most is your advice to "use all the senses". Wonderful!

Thanks so much and voted up and across (not funny) and sharing. Have a terrific day!

The quote about just writing is good. I sometimes start out with an idea and start writing but come up with something totally different than what I started with.
