Creature of the Night

Creature of the Night

Clouds obscured the moon as its reflections danced luminously between them. Lightning flashed off in the night sky while rumblings of thunder gave warning of the approaching storm. A darkly cloaked presence tried hard to hide itself with in the shadows of the dimly lit house; waiting patiently for it’s victim to return. Wind whispered through the trees; their branches to scraped tenuously against the glass widows lining the sides of the home.

Tamika walked down the damp cobblestone road nervously, her skin twitching at every sound echoing in the night air. Looking around frequently, she tried to find comfort in recognizing occasional shapes her eyes were able to pull from their obscurity within the dark spaces.

She continued on hurriedly trying to reach the safety of her home. Rounding the corner she could make out the shape of her front porch and the steps leading to it. She cut through the wet grass and onto the cement path, and then hurried up the steps to the wood screen door of the enclosed area.

Tamika fumbled in her purse trying to find her keys to open the front door. As she inserted the key, lightning flashed and a shape briefly appeared inside, startling her. She paused as her heart began to beat harder, SHe took a deep breath and slowly opened the door 'must be my imagination' she thought trying to ease her worry, then entered her home.

An eerie uneasiness embraced her as she moved cautiously through the living room towards the kitchen and the dim light shining beneath the entry door.

As she opened the door a dark figure rushed towards her. His gleaming white fangs open and ready to bite down on her neck. Tamika screamed, throwing her hands up and pushing the cloaked figure to the ground. She grabbed one of the handles from the cutlery rack and held it out to defend herself from the assailant. As it turned over and pulled the cloak away from its face,“Alex!" She relaxed her grip and let her hand drop to her side, "You scared the crap out of me!” she said sternly. “Why did you do that?”

Alex removed his fake teeth and smiled “I was only funning, Sis. It was a joke.”

“Don’t you ever scare me like that again! I might have really hurt you!”

“Ha ha, yea I bet…..that would have been good. That’s a sharpener!”

She looked down to see the weapon she grabbed and began to smile, “I guess not.”

She reached down and helped her brother up: they laughed together and then the two of them went back into the living room to watch TV.
