Cultural or Technological Advancement: Which Garnered More International Influence for Ancient China?

Updated on July 12, 2017

The Chinese made many groundbreaking and revolutionary innovations that assisted in world progress such as the compass, gunpowder, paper, and advanced shipbuilding techniques. These inventions were much more important than Chinese cultural ideas in terms of international influence.

Many technologies created by the Chinese had large influences on trade and commerce for Asia and eventually the entire world. Chinese shipbuilding techniques allowed for increased trade with far away lands, which helped the spread of ideas. The compass also caused monumental new methods of ship travel to appear. The development of paper by the Chinese led to huge changes and many would say led to the creation of the majority of things we use every day. New techniques like block printing led to these becoming widely considered the most important inventions of the millenia. While the Chinese culture was and is very influential, it is not as groundbreaking or hugely important as Chinese innovations.

It is evident that many technologies developed by the Chinese caused huge changes in the way that ideas and news was spread. These innovations are still used commonly today and are immensely important. Chinese culture is also widely recognized as ancient and complex, but it’s influence was not as widespread or as important as that of these inventions, which shaped the world as we know it.
