Cynicism Egoism

Updated on March 6, 2015

Worldly wise whether smiling at the gallows or
knowing an excuse is easier to sell than a reason
or shrugging at a shoot to kill order of an innocent
man or trying to short-change someone just because
that’s what a wise guy has to do

More annoyed by the sorrows of a young woman
than sanctimony delivered with ease by men who
feign honesty and obstruct justice; he had seen enough
to know that those who say the government is too big
would take our money by unseen power

Rather than read of professed love he would instead
memorize scenes from low brow film noir foggy streets;
trench coats and Fedora’s hung low shadowed his
mind with the failure to cry no matter the cruelty of
those who he would just as soon interview

Every page that was written was only for him to decide
which to believe; it was already known that what could
not be proven was a leap of faith and every constellation
that was named for long dead God’s only reminded him
that what was fact today would be only myth tomorrow

There were as many who would wrap flags around
themselves as those who would decide that any flag
was a death sentence to those who thought freely; he
only waved the flag that offended the least amount of
marks that he had lined up in his sites

The only peace he understood was not from the love of
his heart but from the fears of those who would behave
only by threat of force; for the impatient believe only in
being strong because the patience of a man of true faith
weakens the heart of a man vanishing into the haze

      Hi snakeslane!

I've been posting almost daily on my FB page for however long it's been. Decided to put this one on here. I appreciate your positive words about what I wrote. It is random but thank God for that because that is a drive I have that helps me write which obviously I love to do.

      Take care!

Hello stranger, dark piece here with an opening punch, "shrugging at a shoot to kill order of an innocent man".

I am interested in the dilemma in the third stanza:

"Rather than read of professed love he would instead

      memorize scenes from low brow film noir foggy streets;

trench coats and Fedora’s hung low shadowed his

mind with the failure to cry no matter the cruelty of

those who he would just as soon interview".

      Intense! As usual :)
