DIMES FROM HEAVEN

Updated on February 28, 2015

For the first six months or more

I watched for the simple movement of a door

Or a familiar fragrance in the air

So I simply knew that you were there.

I needed something that reminded me of you

I prayed and prayed for my wish to come true

Others mentioned signs that they would receive

Yet all I could do was hope and grieve.

Then one day I was talking with Sadie

       A kind, gentle older lady

I did not know her well at all

Once or twice we had passed in the hall.

She told me her husband recently died

How she was lost with sadness

       As she cried and cried

For months and months Sadie prayed for a sign

That it was not a final goodbye

Her thoughts were similar to mine.

On this particular day I had spoke with her

She had received a sign the night before

       It was personal, private

       Only she could comprehend

Her heart was finally on the mend.

I told her how I missed my Mother so much

Sadie calmed me with a light gentle touch

I explained that I was waiting for a sign

She assured me that it was only a matter of time.

Another two weeks or so had passed

I ran into Sadie and of course she asked

Did you get it, did you get it

       Did you get the sign

I’ve been thinking about you all this time.

I did, I did Sadie, I got the sign

It was in the form of a shiny silver dime

When I found a second one the very same day

I knew it was my Mother in her own way.

As far back as I can remember

       My Mother collected dimes

       We didn’t have much money

But we had many good times.

Smaller than a penny

       Yet worth 10 times more

       Mother continued to collect them

In her huge glass piggy jar.

I’ve been showered with dimes from heaven

       For many years now

I don’t have all the answers

       But I’m confident some how

That my Mother is near me

       Every single time

       I feel her loving presence

       Dime after dime.

      Hi Carolyn,

To me, there is nothing quite like the loss of our mother. We go on and it does get easier in many ways - yet there is still this empty place that can never be filled. I love how you said you receive coins on days that aren't going well. I totally understand that. So many times when I have found a dime, it is when I am either upset about something or running around with tons of things on my mind. I find the dime and think to myself "okay mom, I will slow down." or I feel that it is my mom's way of telling me that everything is going to be okay. May you continue to find many coins from your mom, when you least expect them and need them the most. Thank you so much for your comment. Take care,

      Sharyn

      Sharon ,

Thank you for this beautiful tribute. My mom is gone from this world 6 years. Every time I think I'm going to be ok, I realize that I'm not. I still get that wrenching pain in my heart when I think that she is really gone. Sometimes I want to think that she just when on vacation and she'll be back any day. I receive coins often, usually at times when things just aren't going well that day, and I do believe they're from her. Thank you again, and God Bless you!

      Hi Yvonne,

Sorry it took me so long to respond to your comment. The minister really gave you a gift as he shared your father's words. Your father was a wise man. I hope you are doing okay today. Losing a parent is quite difficult but as time goes on, special memories continue to replace the loss. Take care and thanks so much for your wonderful comment.

I saw your link on FB, and I can imagine that your mother's birthday must be a hard time for you. Since my Dad died very recently, I can certainly relate to the sentiments in your poem. Although I had several deep talks with Dad in the days before his death, at his funeral the minister talked about a conversation he had had with Dad that I also found comforting. The minister said my father was not afraid of death (this I knew) and that he had said that it just comes down to trust. We don't know what lies before us so we just have to trust. This is not something my dad had said to me personally, at least not recently, but can see that he lived it. And so, although after he died I think perhaps I did have a sign he was okay, mostly I think that what he told the minister is all any of us need to remember.

Beautiful poem, that brought tears to my eyes. After my mum died, literally that night, I heard the phone ring, but when I woke up there was no id caller, nothing, the next day i found out and asked who rang, nobody, did I imagine it? I don't think so, wonderful, and voted up!

Ever since losing my daughter, Lori, in July of 2000, we have been finding dimes in such inconspicuous places and when we do find them we know that Lori is there with us. It's like a reminder to us that she is here always. The first dime was found at the accident (car) site a few weeks after her passing. It was found by my cousin who then was only 8 yrs old. It's been almost 12 yrs now and each and every dime we find is a beautiful memory of my daughter, Lori.

      Hello ITCoach,

Thank you so much for stopping by. One of the reasons that I truly believe the dimes are signs for me is because it is unusual. It isn't pennies or nickels, but dimes. One, my mother collected them, and two - since dimes are worth more, I feel that makes it more likely that people would not just leave them lie. I appreciate your feedback.

      Miss Olive,

You are so right, losing a parent is not something that you can prepare for no matter what the circumstances are. I truly believe that your mom is receiving signs from your dad. Every time I receive a "sign" now, I stop and slow everything down. I take a close look at what I am doing in my life at the time because my Mom is trying to tell me something. More often than not, the message I feel that I receive is "everything is going to be okay." But I have also felt that she is trying to stop me from making bad decisions at times. That was/is so like her . . . I know it's coming up on one year for your dad's passing and I wish you piece and comfort and maybe a sign from him too, that he is fine and wants you to be too. Take care,

      Sharyn

This is a very touching poem - absolutely beautiful. I'm saddened by the loss of your mother and can empathize with your loss. Nothing ever quite prepares us - does it?

Since my Dad's passing, my mom has been mysteriously blessed with pennies. They literally randomly show up out of nowhere. We cannot explain them. She is convinced they are from him and I think she is right - Dad was an avid penny pincher :)

This poem touches the depth of my soul. I continue to look for some type of sign from my beautiful boy that was taken by cancer. I miss him so much and it still hurts like no other pain. I am so sorry about the loss of your dear mother. I am sending you a big warm hug and please know that I am wishing you peace, knowing that she is preparing for the time when you will again be together. Blessings to you, dear Sharyn and whenever I see a dime, it will have a special meaning to me now.

      Hi Diana,

Thank you so much for stopping by here. This poem is extremely special to me. I haven't found a dime in a while and I'm wondering why? I was finding so many for several years. But more recently, I've seen hummingbirds near the front porch which is very unusual since I've never seen them in the almost 9 years I've been there. I just sat there and thought "hi Mom." My Mom loved hummingbirds, so much that we had one engraved on her headstone. So, I have no doubt that the cardinal has a special message for you and is watching over you.

Take care hun, I wish you the best always!

Sharyn, I love this poem! It's so heartfelt and so full of emotion. You've made my eyes tear up. I'm right there with you, darlin'.

My Grandparents who were major animal and bird lovers have sent me birds since they've died. Sounds crazy, I know, cuz birds are everywhere. But this one Cardinal taps on the glass of the window I'm closest to with his beak and if I go into a different room, he's there within just a few seconds tapping on the window in the new room. And it isn't one of the birds that I had raised from a baby cuz I haven't raised any Cardinals in this house we live in now, just Blue Jays and one Robin and a Titmouse! Sooooo...????

Great write. Voted UP, useful, awesome and beautiful.

May peace be in your heart, sweet Share...always,

      Diana

      Dear Mar,

I love the thought of our Mom's sitting on a fence, swinging their feet, looking down and thinking "we did a pretty darn good job down there!" :)

Making up folders of all the quarters and distributing them to special family members is a wonderful idea. They will have a keepsake to be cherished.

My Mom also collected half dollars. They were already in bank rolls. The first Christmas after she was gone, my Dad gave a couple rolls to each of the Grandkids telling them that "this is a special gift from your Grandmother. Keep them in a safe place."

Thank you for sharing your story. May you continuously find quarters when you need them to be there.

      Hugs,

      Sharyn

      Oh Dear Lord...

I have a sneaking realization that our two Mammas have hooked up on Heaven's fence (swinging their feet), where dimes (yours) and quarters (but they have to be the States, mine) are being lobbed in our general directions!

Mom left me tubs of these quarters "just for you", she said! So now my sister and I will be spending time sorting enough complete sets to make up a pretty folder for each sibling, niece, nephew and the four "greats". I am adding those that I find from heaven (and some of my own) as I need 16 sets and that's a lotta coin. But I know my angel will not let me down, she never did!

Thank you for a much-needed smile and a delightful read.

      Voted UP, AWESOME & BEAUTIFUL!

I lost my mother to ovarian cancer when I was eleven years old, she was only forty, but I too get signs that her love still surrounds me. Beautifully written. I look forward to reading more by you, and thank you for the follow.

Sharyn, lovely poem which will start me looking for a sign - I never thought about it. I'm not sure what it will be, but I am sure I'll know it when I see, hear, or feel it. Thank you!

I too believe that the dimes were a sign from your Mother...We never outgrow the need to talk to them...My mother came to me in a dream to say talk and say good bye. Everytime I see a Monarch Butterfly and it follows me...I know my Mom is saying "Hello". Wonderful Hub...I look forward to following you and thanks for becoming a follower of mine.

....well you are a very soulful writer and a deep thinker - and I always come away from your hallowed hubspace with a learning experience or some kind of enlightenment of being in the company of someone who really knows how to put words together with such an emotional and intellectual impact.

Sharyn I love your work!! A lot of poets tend to write prose, which can be beautiful too, but for me unless it rhymes, it's not poetry. Voted awesome and beautiful!!
