Dalai Lama Quotes

Updated on April 2, 2008

His Holiness, Dalai Lama

I am a keeper of quotes. I collect quotes like others collect whatever it is that adults collect. I decided to share my collection of quotes. Some of my favorites are Dalai Lama quotes. The quotes by Dalai Lama prove that he is indeed a wise and spiritual being. Here are just a few memorable quotes by Dalai Lama.

Favorite Dalai Lama Quotes

"Wisdom is the best guide and faith is the best companion."

"The purpose of our lives is to be happy."

"Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible."

"Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions."

"There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples."

"My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness."

"To conquer oneself is a greater victory than to conquer thousands in a battle."

"Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck."

"We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves."

"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion."

"The foundation of all spiritual practice is love. That you practice this well is my only request."

Dala Lamai quote, "The Path to Tranquility: Daily Wisdom."

My favorite from the Dalai Lama so far:

I N S T R U C T I O N S F O R L I F E Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk. When you lose, don't lose the lesson. Follow the three Rs: Respect for self Respect for others and Responsibility for all your actions. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it. Spend some time alone every day. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality. Be gentle with the earth. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

You are welcome. And you're right. It's the same as 'be careful what you pray for' put in a slightly different way.

I always keep in mind the quote about 'not getting what you want being a stroke of luck'. It is definitely true!

It's always great to be reminded of these philosophies. Thank you!
