Dark edge - a poem

Updated on February 16, 2010
Joseph Conrad
Joseph Conrad

“And this also,' said Marlow suddenly, 'has been one of the dark places of the earth.'” Heart of Darkness

I’ve seen the shadow of tomorrow roaring in penance of this sin

the stale unspeaking fossil of frozen tears

that will run a torrent of meltwater

when entropy takes hold, and abandonment seeps in the heart

the journey is blind into unmapped land

and in the distance headlamps touch the dark edge

as a memory in a cinema beam

in the space past the edge of things

my heartbeat looks over the precipice

peering into night's earth where the falling is endless

eyes wide, thirsting for the glint in the road parched from darkness

the world is balanced between white lines that hold at bay

an encompassing shroud for the dead day

out on tarmac sunless shadows play tricks in the retina

running monsters by our side, beckoned by who knows what wraith

the road is eaten, thrown out behind and sucked beneath

it fades forgotten in the blackness, roadkill of the dark space

- a formulated thought, a truth, void of any conception

in the dark edge of things an uncollected debt searches for a convenient soul

" the space past the edge of things "..." sunless shadows "..." running monsters by our side "..." the road is eaten, thrown out behind and sucked beneath "...Wonderfully original and thought provoking images that make this poem not only an intellectual word feast, but was also served with the sweet dessert of questioning philosophy..." in the dark edge of things an uncollected debt searches for a convenient soul "...This poem has found a " convenient soul " in me....Larry

"the world is balanced between white lines"

This is told very well. And I'm pleased to read this text, which is inspiran by Conrad.
