Dear Friend Goodbye

Updated on November 4, 2015
Source

This is a poem about how friendships suddenly come to an end. I guess that we all have faced this situation sometime or the other in life.

Down the years, you still keep thinking why and what went wrong.

Dear friend

Am saying goodbye

Don’t know how

Don’t know why

That we are here today

At this sad moment

Parting ways for no reason

I cannot think of even one

Can you?

I cannot

All I remember is, us having fun

Laughing together

Supporting one another

Sharing secrets with each other

That we would never tell anyone

Do you not remember, dear friend

All those happy days

When fun never used to end

Suddenly

All ended

Don’t know how

We are at this very moment

Parting ways

I cannot even think of one reason

That we are here today

Saying Goodbye

Can You?

Goodbye my friend
Goodbye my friend | Source

Is this the end?

goodbye my friend

is this the end

end of the world

where you and I

were friends

it does not have to be this way

you and I

we can talk

see how far we can go

we may not agree

but that is okay

friendship

is more than just agreeing

in the world of friendship

it is totally okay

to agree to disagree

and still be friends

I hope you see things this way

so that we can forget goodbyes

and be friends again

It is so hard when a friendship seems to have ended and one really does not understand why. Your poem is excellent and poignant.

I have lost so many friends over the years. Some have died, and others just disappear from my life and I never know why.

      Voted UP.

I think we can all relate to this poem. It happens and we don't know why. You've put it into words beautifully.

      Voted up and interesting.

Vellur, as you say most of us can relate to losing friends at various times in our lives. Sometimes time and distance causes you to just drift apart, sometimes there is a disagreement, other times it happens with not knowing why. This is a sad but poignant poem. Voted up.

This reminds me of a lost friend I had when I lived in Missouri. We were so close. When I moved we still kept in touch, then slowly we drifted apart. Sad poem that many can relate to...Voted up..

Losing a friend or someone close to you can be a painful experience. Not everyone reacts in the same in the case of losing someone. Beautifully expressed by you here.

Yes I have ...I had a most dear bosom friend as Anne of Green Gables would say...we were the best of friends till I was 18...and I moved away. then the waters parted and never came together again.

I met up with her when we were both in our 40s...and it was uncomfortable and awkward and sad...

thank goodness that only happened once.

Well expressed...it spoke to the feelings

Angels are on the way to you this afternoon ps

This is sad but many can very much relate. I personally hate goodbyes but find it necessary in life and what's important is that we all learn to move on.

      Nice, relate-able poem.

Vellur - I can connect with your poetry and words of sadness.

Many friends move on and often, if we re-connect at a later time, we realise how different we are. Perhaps that was always an issue we couldn't see so clearly. Your words are beautifully expressed - thank you

Jodah yes time and distances or any disagreement can end up in goodbyes. I feel it is really upsetting when we do not know why good friendships come to an end. Thank you for the vote up.

billybuc thank you and maybe as you say it is sometimes necessary I guess.

CathrineGiordano yes it is very sad, thank you for your visit.

pstraubie48 thank you. When old friends meet again after a long time it gets really awkward because we have nothing common to talk about and we are so different. Thank you for sending the angels!

CrisSp thank you and as you say if it is necessary and for the best then we have to move on though it may break hearts.

travmaj thank you. Re-connecting can gets awkward as you say, over time so many things change.

I have said goodbye many times. Always for a reason. It is when a goodbye is not said and a friend is made to wonder...why??? that I do not like. Yet, every thing happens for a reason. Fabulous poem. Turn that frown upside down and smile! :)

Gosh Vellur.....I hate to be the odd man out...but any really good friend I have ever had in my life for any length of time....who suddenly disappeared, I know precisely WHY. Other than those I have lost through death of course, the others who are gone from my life I simply walked away from for very valid reason.

There are 4 former long term friends in particular whom I have had zero contact with in years, strictly by choice. In all cases I did not take the time to say "Good Bye" nor give an explanation. It's simple. They did not deserve even the slightest courtesy from me, nor did I feel obligated to explain myself.

(Since they are not stupid women, I'm sure they all are fully aware of why I abruptly ended all forms of communication with them and did not respond to any of their attempts.) None of these 4 knew one another, BTW and the demise of the friendships were at different times for different serious reasons. I refuse to play silly games and I cannot tolerate melodrama. There was no reason for me to elaborate, IMHO.

I do feel for you and your sadness. I will hope that you are able to resolve this or somehow comes to terms with this loss. You deserve true, loving friendships.....UP+++

All the people we encounter on this journey of life add value, however, there are times when even the best friendship can become strained. But this is when good friends talk to each other, and shouldn't be left asking what just happened? I've lost friends for various reasons, most often it's because I've moved or traveled abroad, always meaning to stay intouch but somehow miss that window of opportunity. For me, the friendships that stood the test of time seem to be the ones forged early on in life. Saying goodby is never easy, especially when the reason for parting remains unclear. A sad emotive poem, thought provoking and touching.

Well in life these things happen, sometimes we get to attached to that particular person and we think nothing will ever go wrong.

I have been in situations like these before... I think somewhere along the lines a link go missing, mistrust, jealousy etc. Or sometimes someone else befriends them. I guess you should weigh it out and do what best soothe you.

A great topic, and one that I have been challenged with myself these past 4 1/2 years in losing my best friend.

A friend should walk in the doors when the other is in trouble, but I later learned that my once thought of best friend walked out and away forever.

I had thought I had found my soul mate friendship years ago in meeting her. She was quirky and loads of fun--made me laugh all the time. She was generous, like me, sensitive and caring, but I guess with a limit as I later learned.

So yes, this poem resonated with me tremendously. Great idea and great execution.

      Thanks, Robin

Back to take a look. I've just buried my 14-year-old cat, Shep, whom we called "the best cat ever." I got him as a kitten when I did rescue work with a friend, and he lasted a lot longer than the human friendship. He didn't judge, was always there.

Friends I've had a lifetime have often been 'absent' for lengthy periods but when we got together or heard from each other it was as if no time had passed. We were still friends who loved each other and delighted in our friendship. Perhaps one or both of us had changed due to changes in our lives, but the abiding connection we'd shared had not changed.

Sometimes the time lapse had changed a connection somewhat, but it was not negative. and we could pick it up and allow it to blossom again or just let it be. Other times, something that had always been a factor that we had both accepted or ignore earlier had simply become less acceptable to one or both of us, but not to the point that we felt any animosity or need to make an issue of it. We still had pleasant memories of our friendship isn it had been.

Possibly some people whom I liked or valued simply ceased desiring or seeking my company and disappeared, but if so, it didn't feel like a loss or even a rejection to me, but merely their prerogative for their own reasons. In fact, I can think of nothing worse than trapping someone. I do not want anyone to feel obligated if no longer interested or if it becomes tiresome, unimportant, burdensome or for whatever reason for their letting it go.

It may have occurred the other way around at my own choice, and ended without 'drag' or recriminations from the other person. But if someone will not accept and let go out of respect for the other's prerogative, but pursues insistent one-sided communication, while claiming it is because of her/his love and friendship, that kind of love is seriously questionable and better justifies moving away from it.

Love and friendship are not contracts or guarantees to be enforced and 'called in'. It is beautiful only when mutual and fully wanted and accepted by both parties. Otherwise, it is something else.

Let me add that I feel sympathy for your loss, Vellur, or for anyone whose feelings are raw and aching. Accepting a personal loss is not easy. I've lost almost all my most beloved people to death and it has its ache and its abiding sense of loss.

Your beautiful poetry is poignant and sweet in a bittersweet way and it captures the feeling that is sincerely and deeply felt. I hope the pain fades and the awareness that it was as it had to be replaces it. Hugs, my dear.

I also sympathize with those others who have expressed their own sense of loss and grief at losing someone.

It is sad when friendships are broken. I always dream of having friendships that long last in spite of the time differences and the distances. But then again there are friendships that you cannot force in order to keep it, but rather let it go with a heart full of blessings to the departed.
