Toxic Romance

Updated on April 3, 2012

Desperation
is the key
to romance
toxicity
and more than once I,
so inclined,
allowed myself
to be defined
by a needy soul
who happened by,
based on my own
most desperate cry.
When I allow my
value to
rest upon
another's queue,
I fall into
a toxic trap
that promises
to snare and trap.
It may start out
in sweetest bliss
but always ends
with a poison kiss
as I wonder how
it all went wrong,
that started with
the sweetest song.
Yes, I've come to see
throughout the years
by poison kisses
and endless tears
that desperation
is the key
to romance
toxicity.
And since I know
that bit of truth
through the folly of
my fading youth,
I realize though
maybe late,
that quality
is worth the wait,
and I would rather
be alone
than fall into
the toxic zone...
again.

La Thing, thank you for your read and awesome comment!

Suzettenaples, Thank you, kindly! It took a long time and more than one toxic relationship to bring me to this point. I am not fond of being single, but I would rather be single than miserable...a painful lesson well learned!

Ryem, Thanks so much. You are so right, addictive, hard to explain and misunderstood! Well put!

This poem is so beautiful and full of deep emotions. Those toxic romances can be so addictive, hard to explain and misunderstood.

Sharyn, thank you so much! I am sorry to hear that you relate to the "toxic" state, as well. Hopefully, I have lived and learned, and don't have to relearn this one again! And I hope the same for you! Take good care!

Faith Reaper, thank you. Yes, I have been in the "toxic romance" over and over...Some are slow learners, I guess. But I finally figured it out...hard earned wisdom! And the true reality is...I am never really alone!

No-Clue - Great work here for sure! If you hadn't experienced the toxic - you wouldn't be where you are today, knowing that it is much better to be alone and waiting. Excellent! Faith Reaper

Poohgranma, thank you for informing me. I so appreciate that and you! I have filed an official DMCA complaint, as they have three of my hubs posted and credited to bogus authors...but, alas, I am but one of many, I discovered as I looked around that site. From what I gather this is not the first time this site has been guilty of pilfering someone else's material...and the owner of the site BigEzine.com is in New Deli which makes it impossible to sue...At least YouTube responded by removing their promotional video....anyway, thank you, again, for your visit and the concern to notify me. You are a gem!

Your poem has been stolen and posted here.

Cindy Murdoch discovered this site and has been trying to get everyone to search for their own work. She says 90% of what she has read is directly from HP. You can search easily as they don;t even bother to change the titles ... just steal word for word and photos too.

Nikki, thanks! I have had to learn that being "alone" won't kill me but "desperation" nearly did and will!

Poetic Fool, Thanks so much for your read and comment. The most painful lessons are the ones not forgotten, and this one sure qualifies! I'm just grateful I finally "got it"!

So true! Desperation opens us up to relationships we would never normally consider. It can be a hard lesson to learn but as your poem says:

      I realize though

      maybe late,

      that quality

      is worth the wait,

      and I would rather

      be alone

      than fall into

      the toxic zone...

loveofnight(cool name), thank you, kindly! I can't speak for anyone else, but I sure can speak for me, and this is my truth...a hard lesson but one well learned. When my sense of value and worth is dependent upon a relationship or someone else, I am in the soup, every time, and I hit a hard bottom on soup! It's meat and potatoes for this gal! Take care!

Ahh, Sunnie Day, it is such a pleasure to see you! I admit, it has been a rough and rocky year, and my Muse seemed to up and leave me. But perhaps she has returned and that would truly thrill me! God is good, and it looks like we have turned a corner. I hope all is well in Sunniville. Thank you for stopping by and reading my work and leaving such a warm and sweet comment!

I thought this piece was great in your expression of the effects of a difficult relationship, or challenged with certain emotional negative effects. Thank you.
