Discover the Best Books in Post Apocalyptic Fiction even if you don’t Like Zombies
One of my favorite genres is Post Apocalyptic fiction
I am an avid reader. I love books from all genres. One of my favorite genres is Post Apocalyptic fiction. I truly don’t understand what draws me to post apocalyptic stories and settings. I think it is because most of these books are stories of survival, love, loss, betrayal, mystery, suspense, and adventure. These are the attributes I look for in any post apocalyptic book I read. I don’t like blood and gore even though I can handle it in small doses. Another thing I don’t understand is I really don’t like zombies but some of my favorite books have zombies. I decided to share some recommendations of my favorite books in this genre. This list is books that are series so if you don’t like series this is not the right list for you. Personally I love a continuing storyline. The majority of books on my list were written by Indie authors, or they were when they wrote the first book. Some are now bestsellers on Amazon.
I am only writing a basic concept of what the book is about because of spoilers. If you think you might be interested you can head on over to Amazon and find out all you need to know about a book. What is really great about this list is 90% of the books on this list are $2.99 and under. I subscribe to Amazon Kindle Unlimited for $9.99 a month so I have read 80% of these books through the kindle unlimited program. It is not for everyone but I would recommend it for anyone who reads more than 15 books a month or people like me who love the series format.
The 5th Wave: The First Book of the 5th Wave Series by Rick Yancey
The reason this book is at the top of my list is because it is the best alien invasion book I have ever read. This book is about what happens after the aliens arrive and kill off most of the population in waves. These are not nice aliens and for a YA book they do some horrendous things. The main character Cassie has lost everyone in her family except for her younger brother Sammy. For a 16 year old she is tough and determined. Every decision Cassie makes is risky and she is a kick- butt heroine. You will find yourself rooting for Cassie to succeed all though the book. In the first book we follow Cassie on her journey to find her little brother. During her journey she meets the mysterious Evan Walker. The other part of the book deals with Ben Parrish a boy Cassie went to high school with. He is conscripted into fighting with the last of the government who are fighting against the aliens. He becomes Zombie (no zombies in this book) which is a nickname given to him in the boot camp. The story overlaps when we find out Cassie’s little brother Sammy is at this facility with Zombie. There are many twists and turns in this book. The thing I loved the most about this book is you believe things are one way but you find out later things are not what they seem. By the end of the book you will be begging for more. The second book is available now and the third comes out in May 2016.This book is engaging with the right amount of anticipation and a romantic story line.
Life After War by Angela White
People either love or hate this series. Books 1-3 are free on Amazon so it does not cost anything to check it out. In 2012 I was browsing the free books and stumbled upon the first 3 in one set. I was hooked. I have bought each one in the series on the day it is released. This is currently an 8 book series with more to come I hope. I would advise you not to read the reviews on this series until after finishing the first three books. Most complaints are about spelling and punctuation errors. Angela White is a self published author. This series has it all and here is what you will find just in the first 3 books. A government conspiracy, nuclear Armageddon, a refugee camp, magic and supernatural aspects, attacks from nature and man, and a constant battle for survival. It is end of the world brought on by nukes and the story is about the survivors. There are a lot of characters to follow but I will give you a rundown of the main characters. Angie is a doctor but also has supernatural powers. Marc is her childhood sweetheart. They had a child together but somewhere along the way they were separated. Angie is now married to a marine named Ken. Ken and her son Charlie are away at the time of the disaster and end up at Safe Haven refugee camp that is led by Adrian a charismatic leader who has a big secret. Dog who is Marc’s wolf travels with him on his journey to find Angie. When they meet up Angie, Marc and Dog head out to find their son Charlie. The finally arrive at Safe Haven. There are many more characters to follow. There are bad guys that need to be killed on their journey into the wastelands to find supplies. They are in a constant battle for survival. This book is filled with magic and nature out of control along with lovable characters with real human flaws and weaknesses. I think that magic was a pretty interesting addition to the end of the world theme. Personally I think this series is fantastic. I am truly invested in the characters. If you like action, sci-fi and fantasy you will love the LAW series. Great characters, great story line, non-stop action what more can you ask for?
The Purge of Babylon: A Novel of Survival (Volume 1) by Sam Sisavath
One night is all it took. Creatures that once lived in the shadows, hidden from humankind, have risen, spreading like a plague across the globe. Their numbers growing through infection, these creatures have swallowed up whole cities and collapsed unprepared governments. Survivors call it The Purge. Among the survivors are two ex-Army Rangers, a businesswoman, and a third-year medical student. In this book the zombies show up right at the beginning. This one is about zombies or as they are called in the book ghoul’s. They are zombies but zombies with a twist. This book starts out with two great characters, Will the main character and his sidekick Danny. They are a great duo. I loved them and their hilarious dialogues. Of course they are ex army rangers who now work for the Swat team. They first encounter the ghouls in an apartment building where they figure out what kills them. Other characters are introduced as they pick up people trying to get somewhere safe.Over the next few weeks they try their best to keep a handful of survivors alive until they can reach an underground bunker. The action was fast paced with enough time in between to catch your breath, relax a bit and then bam something bad happens. This book kept me interested, entertained and laughing. Anyone who enjoys a great suspenseful survival novel should try this one.
Broken World (Volume 1) by Kate L Mary
I loved this book because it had a new take on the main characters. You will not find any super military dudes running around to save the day.It starts when the last remnants of order still remain. You don’t get zombies jumping out at you right from the first page. People are sick with some strange virus so the book works up to people turning into zombies. The main characters are normal people with no military background. Actually I guess most would consider the leads poor white trash. Vivian is a 20 year old stripper who is on her way to California to find the daughter she gave up for adoption. Vivian is strong and sure of herself and like any good character in a book she grows as the series progresses. Her car breaks down and she gets a ride with two brothers, Angus and Axel who are redneck hillbillies. At first you don’t know what to make of these two brothers and you worry about her safety but she knows how to handle these two since they all come from the same type of background. Angus is an ass plain and simple so he makes quite a character. The only person who can get through his thick head is his brother. He is set in his ways and protective of his little brother although in a way it seems he just wants to boss him around. Axel has had a hard life and he has a thing for Vivian. They head for California in a stolen car and pick up other people along the way. The virus is spreading and by the time they make it to California most of the population has been wiped out. As the book progresses these three and the other people they meet along the way realize how much their world has changed. They grow as characters through the book and you come to find out rednecks do have some useful skills in the zombie apocalypse. This book has great characters, action and romance. I highly recommend this book.
Unleashed: V Plague Book 1 by Dirk Patton
I almost did not download this book because from the synopsis I figured I would not like it. Another zombie book. Groan! I am sure glad I did. This is one fast-paced story! You barely meet the main character before all hell breaks loose. The story follows John Chase who lives in Arizona but is on a business trip in Atlanta. Staying at a hotel north of Atlanta he wakes up to no power, and no phone service. Add to that a naked woman in only a g-string being chased down through a swamp by zombies. The woman Rachel takes off with John and they find a dog along the way. John, Rachel and Dog are awesome characters that you really care about and will root for the whole way. John is determined to get from Georgia to find his wife in Arizona. He turns out to be ex military so of course he has some cool skills. Some of the situations they get into are unbelievable and you think hey there is no way you could survive through that. But hey its fiction and this is what makes it fun. Patton changes things up by making the female zombies more brutal and faster and cunning. I love the female zombies. Nice touch. I enjoyed this book although I am not familiar with military jargon & terminology. I don’t think the majority of female readers will keep reading because Patton does drag out the battles our hero fights. This is a must read for zombie end of the world book lovers. This whole series is excellent. I loved the characters and storyline.
Extinction Horizon (The Extinction Cycle Book 1) by Nicholas Sansbury Smith
This book is about an extinction event plague that turns some of its victims into monsters. These are not zombies! They are infected individuals because of a man made virus; a military experiment gone wrong. The main character Master Sergeant Reed Beckham has led his Delta Force Team (Ghost) through all kinds of hell and never lost a man. His team is called in to head to a top secret medical research facility to recover a sample of a variant strain of Ebola that turn men into monsters. They don’t succeed and the virus is spreading so they are ordered to Atlanta to pick up Dr. Kate Lovato to keep her alive so she can possibly find a cure. Extinction Horizon is based on a super secret super solider chemical mixed with a virulent strain of Ebola but that just makes it more real and exciting. This book is well written with a great mix of military action and science fiction. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good apocalyptic, horror, suspense, or medical thriller.
I hope you have enjoyed these recommendations. I am sure many of you may have already read some on the list. If you like this genre and have not read these books check them out. One other thing I would like to point out is don’t judge a book by its cover. I would also like to note that all books listed here are full length books.
