Discovering Beauty

Updated on October 28, 2014

Long ago he discovered

the beauty of the sand and the sea

Every summer he would head for the shore

there to live and paint

creating images with incredible colors

returning to the city in the fall

It was there that one summer

he saw her standing high up

on a sand dune

looking out over the sea

He knew that beyond the dunes

there was a cluster of summer cottages

but he had always treasured his loneliness

felt that it better inspired his painting

so he had never gone there

as he watched her

she turned toward him

and he was struck by her beauty

Her hair the color of the sun

Her eyes the blue of the sea

and her lips like cherries

and something stirred deep inside him

She turned to go

and the following days

he found himself looking toward the dunes

wondering if she would come

He found himself painting

with colors and emotions inspired by her

soon she had become his muse

and he didn’t even know her name

He saw her once more

just before the summer came to an end

but he would always remember her

his paintings wouldn’t let him forget

Returning to the city

he settled in for the autumn and winter

finding himself painting fields

of golden wheat

and bowls of cherries

then finally he painted her

as he had seen her standing high up on the dunes

Came mid-winter

and he agreed to share

a bit of his muse

with others at an exhibition of his art

wondering if he’d ever see her again

but she came to him

having heard from friends

that his paintings reminded them of her

and curiosity drew her to the city

He thought it was a dream

when she walked into the gallery

and when she stopped by his painting of her

his heart started pounding

it seemed as if she had stepped

out of the painting and into his life

She came to him smiling sadly

hesitant but then told him she loved his paintings

wanted to know when he had seen her

She told him that he had saved her life

just before her friends told her about the paintings

she had been toying with the idea

of escaping from this world

as a love affair gone wrong

had crushed her heart and soul

He was taken aback

thinking that he could have lost her

lost her without getting to know her

They struck up a friendship

there and then and she promised to visit

He promised to return to the sea

when summer came round again

As their love blossomed and grew

he saw the withered rose

start to bloom again

and he knew that come the summer

he would make her his own

stay with her by the sea

If his pictures told a thousand words then your poem pulled one thousand heart strings. Wonderfully done and the photos you picked were perfect. Thank you for the happy ending, I needed that.

You are a hopelessly successful romantic. Keep it up. No bushel basket should hide your candle. It will continue giving light and enjoyment to many.

Wonderful, a happy ending. I've read so many stories lately with tragically sad endings, including one I wrote for annart's challenge. This poem is just what the doctor ordered. I was afraid it wasn't going to happen. Thank you for lifting my heart tonight.
