Dissecting the book The Secret: Chapter 1 - The Secret Revealed

This series of articles entitled Dissecting the Book, The Secret, will critique the information that this book possesses. Although some may disagree with me, some may cheer me on, and others may hate me for destroying a book that is dear to their hearts, I write with conviction and read the book with an open mind. Yet, through reading, my mind continued to contradict what was being written because of knowledge I had gained elsewhere. As you read the articles in this series, remember to not just believe everything you read, but to filter it through the wisdom you have gained in life. This is what I did when I read The Secret; I didn’t take the author’s words as the Truth. I used discernment based on the wisdom that had already been given to me.

Chapter 1: The Secret Revealed

In chapter 1 of the book The Secret, the author reveals six elements of the secret:

  1. The Law of Attraction is The Secret
  2. "Like attracts Like" is what the Law of Attraction suggests.
  3. Thoughts are magnetic and have frequency.
  4. Humans are a transmission tower.
  5. Your current thoughts create your future life.
  6. Your thoughts become things.

The Law of Attraction

“You are the one who calls the law of attraction into action, and you do it through your thoughts.”

I agree with the law of attraction, but I disagree with the definition the book gives. Positive and negative thoughts are what bring positive and negative experiences into your life is what the law of attraction states. How I interpret this is that if I think positively, I will always see the positive in life; therefore, my life will seem positive because that is how I filter everything within my life. If I think negatively, I will always see the negative in life; therefore, my life will seem negative because that is how I filter everything within my life. It isn’t that my thoughts are magically attracting positive or negative things. It is that my brain cannot use its full capacity; hence, it focuses on what I choose to think about. My brain does not control what happens in my life. My brain controls my reaction to what happens. It controls my attitude and outlook upon life. If my outlook and attitude are positive, even when negative things happen, then my life will be positive. That is the law of attraction to me. My attitude and outlook determine whether I see life as positive or negative.

Like Attracts Like

“As you think one sustained thought, the law of attraction immediately brings more like thoughts to you.”

I agree with this point. If I am thinking I am fat and ugly, I will continue thinking in that thought process unless I decide to stop the negative thinking and begin to think positively about myself. Psychology states that if a child is told over and over he or she is worthless, he or she will live a life that is worthless. Why? Because our brain believes what is constantly fed to it. If I believe that I am worthless, my choices will be ones that solidify that I am worthless. The opposite of this is true. If a parent tells his or her son or daughter that he or she has potential and can do great things, the child will grow up believing this and put worth the hard work to be that great potential his or her parents believed he or she could be. What we think and believe influences the choices that we make. The Bible talks about this too in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” When we think about the positive, then the positive will be reflected in our life. When we think about the negative, the negative will be reflected in our life.

Thoughts are Magnetic and have Frequency & Humans are a Transmission Tower

“If you want to change anything in your life, change the channel and change the frequency by changing your thoughts.”

The quote above is the only point in this section of the chapter that I remotely agreed with; I just didn’t like the wording of it. This section of the chapter talks about how our thoughts are sent into the Universe and that they attract things that are on the same frequency because humans apparently are a transmission tower. Oh, did I laugh at the ridiculousness of that statement. The so called Universe has nothing to do with what happens in our life. What we do, our actions, have everything to do with our life. And our actions are controlled by what we believe, which is reflected in how we think. If we change how we believe, we change our thinking. If we change our thinking, we change our actions. If our actions are changed, then our life is changed. Notice that everything is dependent on myself, not on some so called Universe. If you don’t like the life you have, change your outlook, change your mindset/belief/thinking, change your behavior. Our thoughts are not magnetic. There aren’t different frequencies. We are not a transmission tower. There isn’t some Universe trying to connect your thoughts to the right frequency. The life changer, whether your life is positive or negative, whether your life is filled with success or failure, whether you reach your goals or not, that is dependent on how you believe, your thoughts, your outlook, your attitude, and your behaviors.

Current Thoughts = Future Life; Thought become Things

“The only reason why people do not have what they want is because they are thinking more about what they don’t want than what they do what.”

I agreed partially with this. The way the book presents this though is that old doctrine of “Name it; Claim it”. If I want a pink corvette and think hard enough – meditating and praying for it – God will magically give it to me. I am sorry, but God, the Universe, whatever it is that is your Higher Power, is not some magical genie that you can wish upon and then get what you want just because you thought it. No, as in Darren Hardy’s book The Compound Effect (which I highly recommend over this book The Secret), we can think all we want about what we want, but unless we put in the daily habits; the hard work; the sweat, blood, and tears, so to speak, we will not get what we want. Yes, positive thinking is great! Having dreams and goals are great! But unless we put forth the effort to fulfill those dreams and goals or to get the things we want in life, positive thinking will just be positive thinking. Our current thoughts only add up to our future life if we develop the behaviors that make those current thoughts a reality.

The REAL Secret Revealed

So what really is the secret? Is it the law of attraction that states positive thinking will bring positive experiences and vice versa? Or is the secret that what we think and believe, our attitude and outlook, controls our behavior, and if we want our dreams and goals to become reality, we must have the thinking, the belief system, the attitude, the outlook, and the behaviors that will foster those dreams and goals into reality? My money is on the second one: our thinking controls our behaviors, and our behaviors control our future.

Which is the Real Secret?
