Do You Think of Me, A Poem

Updated on December 21, 2012

Every day thoughts of a birthmother

I wrote the below poem several years ago when I was thinking about the son I gave up for adoption when I was 18. He's 25 now, and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of him. He knows where I am, he can contact me if he wishes, but for now that is not how things are, and for the most part I'm okay with that and understand. I still have moments of sadness and am wistful of what might have been, but that is to be expected.

Do You Think of Me?

When you lie awake at night,

Do you think of me?

When you look up at the stars at night,

Do you think of me?

When you look around at others,

Do you think of me?

When you look in the mirror,

Do you think of me?

With each day that passes,

Do you think of me?

I think of you when I lie awake at night.

I think of you when I look up at the stars at night.

I think of you when I look around at others.

I think of you when I look in the mirror.

I think of you with the passing of each day.

(Dedicated to all birth-mothers who wonder these things each and every day, sometimes sad, sometimes out of curiosity, but always these questions pass through our minds about the ones we had to give up to give them something better.)
