Don't Call Me "Kiddo"

Updated on May 21, 2012

a poem about pet names

Don’t Call Me “Kiddo”

I’ve noticed a verbal faux pas of late,

I’m reasonably sure it’s something I hate.

Of all the pet names that could possibly be uttered,

this is the one that you shouldn’t have muttered.

Back in the day, when I was a child,

parents opened their mouths and it seemed quite mild.

Then as a teen, it still was ok,

It didn’t bother me on any given day.

But the years have flown by, although time has been kind,

I’m getting to the point where I really do mind.

The reference is “kiddo” and it grates on my nerves,

So please pay attention; I’m a woman with curves!

This is great! I call kids "kiddo" all the time. That way, I don't have to think of calling them anything else ... like their real name!

I agree, kiddo is a childish name to call an adult. But to me it's not as patronizing as honey, dearie or sweetie. :)

A favorite uncle used to call me Kiddo all the time, and I never mind it these days...it's sort of like comfort food and it brings back good memories. I sometimes call others by that pet name. Nobody's hit me yet for it, but maybe I should be a bit more sensitive, just in case. Nice poem!

Funny stuff. Interesting that kiddo bothers you the most. Not "babe" or "toots"? Those seem to drive women crazy. Maybe someday you'll want to be called kiddo again. Or not. Either way, cheers.
