Dummies Books for Dummies?
A Dummies Book Cover
Anyone who knows me knows this is a very appropriate title for me to tackle! I'm not saying I'm a dummy but the simpler layout of the Dummies books is one anyone can handle. I have been interested in the "Dummies" books for over 15 years - what better way to learn than to read a book written for Dummies! When I first began working with computers my favorite learning and teaching book was Windows for Dummies.
While the titles are laughable the contents are not. These instructional/reference books are written in separate parts that give you step by step information in an easy to read and easy to understand format.
The subtitle on every Dummies book reads, "A Reference for the Rest of Us!" That means those of us who won't understand the technical mumbo jumbo presented in technical books, will understand the Dummies books. The not so funny thing is there are now over 1,600 "Dummies" titles.
"Dummies" topics cover a wide range of subjects
The Titanic For Dummies
Defensive Driving For Dummies
Acoustic Guitar Songs For Dummies15-Minute Workout For DummiesBackgammon For Dummies
Composting For Dummies
Organic Gardening For Dummies, 2nd Edition
Bathroom Remodeling For Dummies
Building Chicken Coops For Dummies

Wine For Dummies, 4th Edition
The first Dummies book was written in 1991, right around the time I discovered them. I believe the first was DOS for Dummies. As I said, I was really just starting out in computers and when I found this book I was thrilled. Something in non-technical language that I, a novice, could actually understand.
I said earlier there are 1,600 Dummies titles, what I didn't say is Dummies books have sold over 200 million copies! That's a lot of Dummies. Seriously, the best part about the Dummies books, no matter what the title, they are easy read and easy to find in a book store. They are always that yellow and black cover so you don't have to hunt when you're in a book store. Though these books started out covering technical issues they have branched out into every area you can think of.
I have to admit when I first started buying Dummies books they were around fifteen dollars now they are over twenty and many thirty or more, with a few still a little cheaper. I guess inflation attacks Dummies just like anyone else!

Since the books are written in parts and not like a novel, you can skip to any part of the book that interests you without feeling left out or like you're missing something. You can go right to the part that is what you need. Each author describes each detail in that nice and easy to understand language. You might find a joke or two thrown in but that just makes the read easier and a bit lighter.
Fellow hubbers take notice,Peter Kent has published a Dummies book; Search Engine Optimization for Dummies. This book has great references and a companion website. Kent discusses Page Rank in this book and shows that links from your own community are worth more than links from non-related websites. (By Jason McDonald, Senior SEO Instructor, JM Internet Group, Posted: January 25, 2010, http://www.jm-seo.org/blog/seo-for-dummies.html) AND there's a Google Adwords for Dummies! It contains a chapter called "The Ten (or so) Top AdWords Mistakes". Just two more great examples of the Dummies titles available and that might be of interest to some hubbers and others looking to add to their website traffic and income.
As I continued my research into the Dummies books I was more and more amazed at how many titles would help with Hub Pages, like Pinterest for Dummies. Additionally, I found lots of good hub pages about Dummies books! How about Blogging for Dummies by fundamentallife; Book Review; Personal Fiancé For Dummies by Richard Stephen; Learn to Trade Like a Wall Street Pro by DanPowers, and I know there are more.
The Dummies books are really hard to ignore. If you haven't read one you must certainly know someone who has. There are many websites with lists of the Dummies books, a good one I found was http://www.ontherunevents.com/books/dumm01.sht this page gives the name of the book, the price of the book and a link to http://www.amazon.com to buy the books.
Of course the people behind the Dummies books are no dummies. They now have their books available as EBooks. I found Singing for Dummies as a free ebook download at http://www.ebook3000.com/muisc/Singing-For-Dummies_115973.html, Linux for Dummies 8th Edition at http://ebooksfrom.blogspot.com/2008/11/linux-for-dummies-8th-edition.html, other computer related Dummies books at http://www.ebooks-space.com/ebook-tags/dummies, and there's lots more out there if you search the Internet.
Some titles I did find for purchase included Pinterest for Dummies, Green Cleaning for Dummies, EMail Marketing for Dummies, etc. A good place to purchase Dummies Ebooks of course is at dummies.com.
Dummies books are also offered on audio. I found a good site for Dummies audio books at Learn Out Loud.
Its easy to see why the Dummies books have sold so many copies. They cover just about everything you can think of (including Beer for Dummies), and are offered in every format you can think of from the printed page to Ebooks to audio. Oh, did I tell you there's an app for that? Yes, you can get them for your ipad too.
You can buy Dummies books just about anywhere from Amazon to Barnes & Noble to Target with only a slight variation in price. Of course computer stores like Staples carry them too but the selection may be limited. For the biggest selection check out Amazon.
So if you don't want to be a dummy read a Dummies book!
