Malcolm Lowry, Epitaph

Updated on March 12, 2010

Malcolm Lowry

Late of the Bowery

His prose was flowery

And often glowery

He lived,nightly, and drank, daily,

And died playing the ukulele.

Selected Poems of Malcolm Lowry

City Lights Books, 1962

Malcolm Lowry's most notable accomplishment was the semi-autobiographical novel "Under the Volcano," perhaps the greatest novel by an alcoholic about an alcoholic. It was also a great movie starring Albert Finney, John Huston and Jacqueline Bisset. If you really want to know about alcoholism, read Lowry's book and see the movie.

I have just recently reread Under the Volcano 3 times in preparation for teaching it. It is now firmly entrenched on my top ten list of greatest novels.

Thanks. I thought you might like the joke. It was told to me many years ago by a friend named Frank Angle who was quite good at capturing the stuffy Oxbridge accents of the three brigadiers and the Scottish accent of the Sergeant Major.
