One Selfless Act

Updated on March 5, 2013

Aside from people who loves us and would gladly take an extra mile of sacrifice, what will make a complete stranger become a hero or heroine to your eyes?

Is a cape or a costume important? Or maybe super powers to leap and save a person from a rushing bus?

Or just any kindness that comes from that person’s heart not knowing he saved a life?

Let me tell you something that touched my heart and made me think, “What will I do if I’m on her situation?”

I met a stranger on a bus one rainy night on my way home. She was shivering; her dress was wet because of the rain. I moved the air conditioner away from her and asked her if she’s okay.

“Yeah,” she slowly smiled.

We we’re silent for a moment and my eyes caught the extra sheet on her folder. It was a resume and it was all wet. She managed to save it but it was already smudged.

“From interview?” I asked.

“Yes, it’s hard to find a job right now in the middle of calamities and with so many competitions," she answered.

To kill the time, I asked her few questions that might help her find the right company for her. In the middle of our conversation, I found out she was already hired by one company as an Admin Assistant and was offered a good starting salary.

She told me that only two of them were chosen to make it to the final list. She was the one who was favoured to take the job – but she backed out.

What changed her mind was that, during the long wait on the lobby for the final interview, the other applicant just mentioned to her how he needed the job to feed his family. He has kids and he’s gone a long way of applying and interviews.

So when she was congratulated by the Hiring Manager, she calmly declined the offer and suggests hiring the man instead of her.

Then she said to me, “He just need the job way more than I do... That man is a father and he has kids.”

I glanced at her and I can’t find any trace of regret or bitterness on her decision. Then she smiled.

I bet she doesn’t know how many lives she’d saved that time for making that choice. I was moved by the great heart of this girl giving one great opportunity to a stranger and made one life of a family much better.

Really inspiring! In today's world of competition we hardly find people who are willing to sacrifice something as important as a job oppurtunity.

      Very well written, Spy.

      Voted up :)

Yes, she was a wonderful person for being so kind. If I ran that company, I would have given both of them that job, as it showed the woman to be exemplary in decision making.

This hub hits home for me. If it wasn't for the help of a stranger, I wouldn't be where I am now. I actually write an article about it, but strangers can become a hero to us. It is amazing how far a good gesture and a little help can go. She sounds like a special person. Up, useful, and awesome.

What would it be like, if the news started every evening with a story like this one? It will inspire us all to be kinder and act more noble to each other. What she did was incredible, it wasn't just a 'job' like at a deli it was a career job that is hard to be hired in.

Your writing gave her tribute to the character and heroine that she is.

      Voted up and shared.

To go to the ends of the world

      to help a stranger

      To give someone incredible kindness

      they will never forget

To treat animals and all of nature

      with respect and compassion

These are the things that give life true purpose.

      To value your special uniqueness

as a beautiful child of God

      To elevate your mind

with the higher value of integrity

      To upgrade your living environment

planting seeds to enrich the soul

To give a child caring devotion

so they feel they are loved
