Finding Me and My Place

I don't 'suffer' from dyslexia, I live and work with it. I suffer from ignorant people who think they know what I can and cannot do. -E.Cook

Most of my life was spent in Alvin Texas, a small town sandwiched between Pearland, League City, and Angleton. Nothing ever happens here, and everything is five minutes away from all angles of the town. The biggest thing in the town is a Wal-Mart.

My mom and step-dad, have found their place here. So has my sister and her family. For them, it's a great place to raise their kids and spend the rest of their old age together. Also, our home church is here.

To me, Alvin is too small. Growing up, I wanted to move to New York because i thought that's where I belonged. Then three years ago, for my sisters thirtieth birthday we went over to New Orleans. While there, I fell in love with cities pace and the art running up and down the streets. The culture was beautiful and the people were friendly. I felt at home at first tarot reading.

After I graduated from high school, I thought I knew where I was supposed to be, bible school. While there, I didn't really feel at home, I felt like my time was running out to figure what I was supposed to do and where I was supposed to be, and with only four months to do it, it doesn't give me much time.

When I was done with bible school, I immediately started to attend college at ACC. After one semester I decided to change my major from communications to psychology, then I took the summer off to get a job and relax, just take a break from school.

During these last few weeks, I've had a feeling that I didn't belong in this town and that I needed to escape, from what? I'm guessing this small town, because I don't feel like there's anything for me here. I'm about to turn twenty, and the last thing I want to do is spend anymore time here in Alvin.

When I graduated from high school, my sister Monica told me; “These next few years are going to be the most confusing of your life.” Now I know, more than anything that was right.

I'm on the edge of twenty and trying to find my place in this world. So far, I think maybe it's in either New Orleans, New York, even another small town in Alabama. For now, I’ll settle for the Alvin and the towns surrounding it, at least until I have the funds to move out of state and finish my time at ACC.

I'm still young and have plenty of time to find the perfect place. It's not going to just come to me after a few weeks or months, it may even take a year or year and a few wrong choices, but it’ll happen eventually. I just have to wait.

Home isn't where

you are from,

it is where

you belong.

Some is us

travel the whole

world to find it.

Others,

find it in person.
