Five Must Read Modern English Meaningful Essays

Updated on July 29, 2019

The word essay is derived from a Latin word 'exagium', it also means 'to try' or 'to attempt'.So essays are a short and pithy piece of writing representing one’s side of the argument or one’s experiences, stories, etc.

In this article, I am going to tell you few must read essays written by renowned authors that will leave meaningful messages that cross your mind.

Without waiting any longer, let's get into it.

1. ARE DOCTORS MEN OF SCIENCE?

A great piece of work in english literature written by Bernard Shaw. This essay is one of my favourites that completely changed my perspective about doctors.

In this essay Shaw exposes the duplicity of doctors who refer themselves as men of science and criticizes the man in the street who considers doctors men of science as well. Shaw reveals that doctors have nothing to do with science. All they know is the art of giving medicines to the patients.

Furthermore he tells a story of his encounter with a doctor in the hospital.

2. WALKING ON THE MOON

This is kind of narrative essay. Walking on the moon is written by an astronomer David R. Scott who experienced his tour to the moon in Apollo-15 spaceship 'endeavour'.

He tells the whole story how they orbit around the moon for hours then landed on the surface. It took several hours settling Endeavour on the ground then how their lunar vehicle turned into a dwelling just after pushing a button.

David shares his experiences of floating in the moon's atmosphere without falling on the ground due to the gravity. 'There were no one but us' he sighs.

3. TO ERR IS HUMAN

In this essay, the writer talks about computers and points out that man has been blessed with rational faculty. this faculty enables man to think, calculate and make choices. the computers also work on the same line.

We are often get surprised when we come to know that the computer has committed mistake. the computer prepares wrong bills of telephone and electricity, departmental stores sometimes. The bank supply us wrong statements of balance and types wrong addresses.

Lewis tells us that to err is human. This is all happen because of fingering, tampering or hitting the wrong keys. the computers make mistakes because they are operated by human beings.

4. NAGASAKI, AUGUST 9, 1945

As you can perceive what could be happened on that date. This short essay was written by a victim of nuclear bomb at Nagasaki Michaito Ichimaru who fortunately survived on this horrible day.

Ichimaru tells, It was a bright sunny day on 9 August 1945. As usual he was getting ready to go to the university but suddenly he heard the sound of two fighter jets. After few minutes, a powerful explosion happened.

The writer was a fortunate survivor of the attack. However, he too, was wounded on his shoulder. He saw a large number of heart rending scenes of destruction.

When after a couple of hours the writer went out, he saw people ''they looked like ghosts with vacant stares'' he writes. I cannot get rid of crying women. They were all crying for water and pain.

The write wishes not to see these scenes again in life. He prayed for eliminating all the weapons of mass destruction.

5. WHISTLING OF BIRDS

This essay is a beautiful piece of literary work written by D.H Lawrence. It is kind of descriptive essay.

Lawrence beautifully contrasts the beauties of spring with the destruction of winter. He says spring is the name of life and activity, while winter is the name of destruction and ruin.

The writer depicts the beauty of spring by employing powerful images through writing flames of sunshine, the glimmering of new creation, subtle new wind from heaven, threads of silver, silvery blissfulness.

On the other hand, he tells the destruction caused by winter as:

  • Heavy silence of frost
  • Bloody torn carcasses of birds
  • Death of overwhelming flood
  • Black tide
