Floating Away

Updated on July 23, 2012

I see us floating downstream

Gently, slowly, surely

Lying on separate rafts

But still only a whisper away

We love each other still

But perhaps just not enough

To reach out to one another

And keep our rafts

From drifting

Further and further and further

Apart

We just gaze at one other

With nothing left to say

And let the wind and currents

Control our fate

I fall asleep

And let myself drift

And wonder if when I awake

I'll be able to see you at all

Sometimes in my dreams

You are reaching out your hand

And paddling towards me

And I take it

And we float together

Towards the sea

But most of the time

I only dream of waterfalls

But I always wake up

Before I start to fall

Nice work, Kara. I loved the sense of longing here and the analogy of a raft and two drifting lovers is apropo

Aww this is so sad. sometimes you just need to jump off that raft and start swimming. Happiness is worth the possibility of drowning.

Very symbolic of love sometimes - where we can reach out toward one another... or not. Beautiful poem.

Fantastic use of symbolism. This is beautiful and sad at the same time.
