Flowers and Rainbows - a poem about the frilly things in life

Updated on June 18, 2013

Flowers and rainbows
Are frilly silly things
When reality has you in its throes
This world has too much hurt and pain
No time to fuss over colors after rain
Or notice fields in floral bloom
Or listen to a sweet bird's tune

Righting wrongs and being strong
Crying out when injustice found
Encouraging change your favorite song
Noble pursuits always at the forefront
Doom and gloom and fight and strife
No time to waste on frilly silly things
What a lonely gloomy life

I don’t paint rainbows in my room
My voice is no melodious tune
Never will I shit rays of sunshine
I don’t always pen a pretty rhyme
But I see the sparkle in a newborn’s eyes
I feel passion in lovers’ sighs
And listen to the songbird’s trills

I always get such joyous thrills
When I read of Wordsworth’s daffodils
Those glorious flowers sucking strength
From muck of the soil and decomposed life
As much as from the glow of the sun
That strikes droplets clear to make rainbows
That I stopped painting long ago

Flowers cheer my somber soul
With visions lovely as they grow
And feed bees that make the honey
Soothing elixir golden and sweet
A remedy as much as a treat
From insects with a dreaded sting
Used to defend that precious thing

Beauty rises from the muck and dirt
Healing comes from things that hurt
Frilly flowers and candy sweet
Not always just a frivolous treat
These silly things, they heal and feed
Giving energy we sorely need
A retreat from things hard and sour

We cannot spend all waking hours
Waging wars for what is right
If all is shadow without light
Let us have for goodness sake
An occasional piece of cake
Show us what we are fighting for
How else can we wage this endless war

Without frilly things life’s just a chore
To read and write of love and flowers
Can give to us such glorious power
These pursuits are not a waste of time
They make our meager lives worth living
Just ask those children that you are saving
What things put smiles on their faces

As I fight making this world a better place
As I encourage others to join the race
I will stop to ponder colors after rain
And read of flowers and eat of sweets
Write of things that to my soul are treats
I might even paint rainbows once again
I hope you all will do the same

      I like this especially,

"Beauty rises from the muck and dirt

Healing comes from things that hurt

      Frilly flowers and candy sweet

Not always just a frivolous treat

These silly things, they heal and feed

      Giving energy we sorely need

A retreat from things hard and sour"

      oh, and this too,

"We cannot spend all waking hours

Waging wars for what is right

If all is shadow without light

Let us have for goodness sake

      An occasional piece of cake

Show us what we are fighting for

How else can we wage this endless war

Without frilly things life’s just a chore

To read and write of love and flowers

Can give to us such glorious power

These pursuits are not a waste of time

They make our meager lives worth living

Just ask those children that you are saving

What things put smiles on their faces

As I fight making this world a better place

      esp the last line.

      thanks!

I am really enjoying reading what everyone is getting from this one. It started out as a funny sort of "wager" with another hubber, and challenge to myself. Of course, you know me, I had to go throw my heart into it.Glad you like it! :)

ImKarn23 - Leslie, it's YOU again!! We are connected. Somehow I thing you and I are riding the same wavelength in this great big universe, and there is no one else I would rather me riding with!

The confidence is coming. How could it not be with you beating me oever the head with it with one of those fabulous shoes of yours! Confidence is new to me. I don't dare get to excited, whenever I do, things come crashing down.

      Thanks for sharing again!

Now take a minute to stop and smell the daffodils. or shoes. well, maybe don't smell the shoes. unless they are new. or would that be weird?.... go have frivolous fun! :)

Your poem really carries me along, as I'm thinking - 'yeah - that's right! and - 'ah - that's beautiful.' You write with such forthright genuine feeling, which comes through unmistakably. I really like this, Dana. You did celebrate the lovely 'frilly, silly' things. It's one of the best way to fight against the dreary, sad things. Certainly reiterating them just adds to their force.

CloudExplorer - Nice to see you here.... My hopes with this poem are to call for a balance in our efforts. It is noble to fight the good fight against the foe of your choice (hunger, poverty, opression) it is also noble to sing the joys of the beautiful things. Those are what we are fighting for in the end arent they? The fighters should enjoy that beauty, the artists should respect those that fight.... Balance. No beating dead horses. No heads in the sand.. No all work with no play.....

I cannot thank you enough for all the sharing! :)

ImKarn23 - LESLIE, I HONESTLY LOVE YOU! Your comment turned a crappy morning into a happy afternoon! Thanks for inspiring me! I was hoping you would like this. Funny thing, that line you quoted, I was thinking as I wrote it, "I bet Leslie will like that part." No Joke!!!

Maybe I deserve a little bit of credit. How's that? I don't want to get to excited just yet, that always tends to send the tower crashing down. I am doing the best to pay my dues and climb the ladder up to... where the heck am I going anyway? Wherever it is, if I ever get there, I owe it a lot to you. Hopw you will be there with me.

      Thanks for sharing this! xxxx

And read of flowers and eat of sweets

Write of things that to my soul are treats

Many people whom are so gun ho all the time simple and utterly miss the secrets to life, and I'm not saying the false secret, but the actual true one, like your poem here.

When we manifest ideas into action, they run off into the vast universe and bring us back exactly what we been putting out there. So yup if you want more war, all you have to do is think of wars, and walla presto here it is. If you want love, then think about that one too, and bang its right at your doorsteps literally, but many people have no clue how to consistently do such things today.

To much television I suppose, anyhow this was a powerfully expressed poem here by you Dana, highly fine tuned to rip any heart out of a false living condition if they actually read the darn thing.

Thanks for this one, and I already shared this awesome poem in many locations for ya, nice one! great message, and I get tired of the beating of the dead horses too :) Hint hint!

So true, Dana, real events and circumstances could be compared with depressants while Nature is an anti-depressant to be taken daily and even overdoses of it.
