A New Year

I have a poem sitting in my notebook which is composed of fragments that often appear to have unity under only their title, while they are essentially unalike. The collection is titled "Sovereignty", I no longer remember why. For the new year, a section of that poem.

From Sovereignty

The cantor lifts his head

the peace of forgetting

begins with the moon

gravestone tongues

too heavy

to lift into words

The cantor cannot sing

the dawn is not coming

mud on his boots

a shovel in his hand

his father's last words

in his pocket

and in the pocket

a hole
