Many People Enjoy Reading

It is always fun for many readers to receive free magazine subscription in the mail or in their email inboxes. Here is a list of resources to add to your collection of magazines and reading options.

Increasing Numbers of Free Materials

Increasing numbers of free magazines, newsletters and eBooks are becoming available online as more people learn how to create them.

While some of these offerings are strictly sales literature, others are informative, entertaining, and fun to have. Even employment news and trade or business journals are available online these days.

One free publications site offers you another free magazine subscription nearly very week after you sign up for your first pick.

This particular company is Mercury Magazines, located at www.mercurymagazines.com/pr1/100/10000.

By answering a few questions about your interests and line of work, you can receive many offers of free reading materials.

Why Free Magazines?

Importance of Free Magazines Increasing

  • MediaFinder Reports 142 Magazines Launch and 65 Close in First Nine Months of 2014:

"Compared to the same period in 2013, magazine closures are up, from 45 last year to 65 this year, and launches are down slightly, from 145 to 142." -- Publishing Executive; pubexec/com, 10/6/2014.

Health related magazines and business-to-business publications are increasing in numbers, however.

Useful and Practical Publications

Useful and Educational Publications

Other sites are more like this one at Lowes, http://www.lowescreativeideas.com/. This one is a link to DIY and Home & Garden decorating ideas and projects.

If you need even more free materials for gardening, DIY, health matters, cooking & canning, and more, then access your local University Extension site for numerous useful guides, handouts, schematics, and more. The University Extension shares information gathered by the colleges within the university and is usually up to date.

You can find anything from how to raise a baby to how to choose the best plants for your garden and build a greenhouse. If you want to know about native and invasive insects in your county, the extension site has that, too.

Find additional free materials, especially for your writing and music, here.

Free Magazines via the Internet

You can receive free magazines from several online sources.

Once you receive your first issue of a free magazine subscription, you may find a response card in the magazine that lists additional free subscriptions.

I have received a number of free magazines of good quality on topics such as popular music, safety and health, art, history, psychology, martial arts, business, travel, restaurants, insurance, computers, and many others.

Some companies provide a one year subscription with no request for you to ever buy anything.

The method in which some others of these Internet magazine sites work is that they provide a free one-year subscription. At the end of the first year, they bill you for the next year and if you don't want to continue the subscription for a price, you simply do not return the subscription payment.

Free Magazines are Printed in Many Languages

Numerous other magazine subscriptions remain free from year to year, with an occasional request for you to update your information. Some of these come to you based on your professional or educational qualifications or interests.

Still other magazines are online-only (digital) magazines and many are of them free of charge as well.

Although free magazine sites often advertise as business magazine sites, all sorts of magazine genres are available from a number of them.

Fanzines: Inexpensive and Sometimes Free

Collectible issues can bring big-ticket prices, but others are much less expensive or even available at no cost: Check Craigslist "Free" listings and garage sale listings. You may find a room full of good finds!

Boldly Writing: A Trek Fan and Fanfiction History, 1967-1987
Boldly Writing: A Trek Fan and Fanfiction History, 1967-1987

Spockanalia fanzine began in the mid-1960s in New Jersey and was inexpensive. It was the very first Star Trek fanzine and its several issues appear on Amazon form time to time. I've found each issue as fascinating as I do this book that guides us through the path of the first fanzines through the 1980s.

Fanzines

Fanzines are written by the hard core fanboys and fangirls of science fiction sagas and other genres of entertainment that are often no longer in production. Some of these publications are offered at low costs through snail mail subscriptions.

Hard copy print editions of some of these issues can become very valuable. This includes the Star Trek® universe, Dr. Who, Space 1999, Lost In Space, and others. From time to time, fanzines are offered for sale online at Amazon.com and eBay.

Crime stories and science fiction were offered in the early 20th Century as pulp fiction. in 19th C. England as Penny Dreadfuls and in the US at the same time as Dime Novels. You see references to dime novels in early Mad Magazine issues and many people today wonder what they are.

Fanzines are a lot like all of those earlier publications, often produced at home and copied for distribution at places like FedEx Kinko's. When the Internet became popular, a larger array of art and clip art became available for these covers and pages. Some have become online magazines via YouTube.
