Full Mooned

Updated on March 16, 2011

Mighty Mom is a keen observer of life. She shares her personal experiences and opinions in helpful and often amusing ways.

Blissfully blank

My head on the pillow,

Sweet slumbering solace.

'Til jolted awake.

Something's off. Someone's here.

Ears pricked, pulse quick'ning

I bristle alertness.

Alarmed door creaks

Tinkling its warning

What the…?

Bolting upright to see

I'm blinded by brightness

My mole eyes pop open

My arms flailing Braille

Who's that creeping around my door?
Who's that creeping around my door?

At the window,

Dark wooden slats

Cut striated slivers

Of silvery moonlight

Winking and blinking, insistently brilliant,

Like some urgent Morse Code,

Beseeching me

… what?

Bad Moon Rising

The clock says twelve-forty

Is it midday? Or midnight?

Pulse racing, I streak

Away from the blindness

Toward the intrusion.

Who’s that in my foyer?

What was the moon’s message?

“Hey, Mom, I’m home.

Full moon, you know.

People drive crazy.”

“Yes, Honey. I do know.

It does make us crazy.

To bed with you, now.

It’s late though it’s light.

Shut your blinds, shut your eyes.

And don’t forget

to turn off the moon.”

Aw shucks, MPM. You're making me blush. Coming from a wordster such as yourself, this is a true compliment. I thank you. So excited I think I'll go out and howl at the moon (not full tonight, tho, although only a coupla days till the Autumnal Equinox!)

Really, a great poetry read...indeed. Surely...all full moons leave much to the imagination. have managed to capture this one moonlit night in poetry...very well I might add...and helped us readers...get to envision the same feelings and emotions that you experienced. Very Real. Bravo...Well Done!

AIDY, I'm glad you got around to visiting. I am loving doing hub poems -- decorating them with images is a big part of the excitement!

Ralwus -- LOL. I don't need to have guns in the house. All I would need to do is flash a prowler with my nakedness and they'd run for the hills:-). MM

BOO! Nice bit of prose here. ummm, were you really naked when you 'streaked' away from the brightness? oh my, hehe

Puppascott -- Sorry to have freaked you out with the mole eyes! That's exactly how I felt, tho. Like a blind mole coming up out of the dark staring into the too bright moon.

I have to admit that I can't remember anything I read after "mole eyes." Just trying to picture someone with those little beads on their face was too much; I couldn't get the thought out of my head. Thanks.

Hi Cindy! What a beautiful image -- people all over the world communing via watching the moon! I also am intrigued with the moon's pulll on the tides. Not so much the disruptive effect it has on animals and people during these full moons. Pretty, but man, I need a good night's sleep!

Why thank you, Rochelle. My Hubby is an avid Farmer's Almanac reader and always tells me the official name of each month's full moon. They are so colorful.

The full moon in dark woods -- that's a beautiful image (why does Robert Frost come to mind?).

This particular full moon was like being under a fluorescent interrogation light in Precinct #9:-). MM

Lovely imagry. I love the full moon in my dark woods, every month is different, but always startlingly bright. No wonder the ancient tribes thought her a goddess.

You are certainly mighty, as well.
