Glass, Knives, and Blades

Updated on April 28, 2011

I have heard this once to many times. I am guilty of this little thing here called cut along the dotted line. I was always to afraid of doing it I figured I was still alive for a reason. We all hear about suicides and emotions. Well I wrote this poem because I am hearing more and more teenagers finding a trend in cutting themselves. I find it hard to believe as I have two step daughters who are teenagers and I try my best to support them and listen when they need to be heard. So if you got a teenager at home make them aware of how important they are and how much you love them no matter what..... Lets love our children unconditionally and show them eternity. Thanks for reading

Cut along the dotted line.....

Glass, knives, and blades

Slicing deep it all seems to fade

They all cut the same

A vertical cut I wish to play a game

Blood spills and glides against

A presence I felt or maybe sensed

My nude colored skin and stain

Not one but two it numbs all this pain

I wonder what they will think

When they find all my blood in the sink

Honestly I really do not care

I know I will give them a scare

No one seems to care anyhow

Against the porcelain tub my head takes a bow

Dead or alive to them it just won’t matter

A broken reflection mirror shattered

A little girl inside crying all alone

As I exhale a heart broken groan

No one to tell her the words she wants to hear

One thing she always taught me was to never live in fear

How many stories must we live to hear like this

A life of eternal salvation and all will dismiss

If only we rejoiced in all accounts and trials

A closed case of blues in a cabinet of files

Hells gate is easy to find in every decision made

He masks himself and will fake and masquerade

Lead you into a deep dark hole and burry you alive

It’s up to you to put up a fight and want to survive

Cutting is insidious. The poem speaks to the pain and reasons why people do this to themselves. Beautiful...

Very brave topic to address and so very well acheived in this bitter-sweet poem. I have known self harmers, and I went through a very short period of contemplating it but fortunately I escaped the cause before it became a fact. I applaud your words and love your work :-)

      Hi Bella,

This is SO VERY POWERFUL. I have a niece who cut herself. I believe she stopped but I am not positive. My sister says she has stopped. It was a few years ago and she just turned 18 last week. I worry about her all the time. I just saw my niece on Easter. She looked good and appeared to be doing well. I hope so. Thanks for writing this!

Bellawritter, It sounds like you are paying attention too your teenagers and that is half the battle. Don't ignore them. My daughter has a friend who did this and when we found out, we both knew something wasn't right at home. We have been her second family and there for her. Communication is so important in any relationship. Great hub.

Hyphen, I honestly believe once in our life time we wanted to inflict pain on ourselves once here or there I think the going gets tuff and we just seek different avenues on trying to release. Thanks for reading...

You are a pillar of strength. Your children can draw from your reserve if needed. With your continued outpouring of love for them they are safe from such thoughts.

The poem does tell a sad trend in our society. I have always found cutting fascinating and attractive. I wrote even a poem about it also many years ago. Once I was mature the desire went away. I never acted on it.

Your Hub makes my heart hurt for these young people.

Dallas, It scares me as well. When my lil sister was about 16 15 maybe I would take her to help me work my place of business and we walked into a vacant vicinity and it had a stair way leading down and a chandelier hanging over head she said wow this would be a great place to hang myself and then she changed it when I turned and starred with fright I immediately told my mom and we had a very long talk at the time she was being teased by girls at school and they were taunting her. Well the main girl who taunted her ended getting rapped and she told a so called friend that person went and told the whole school well the girl that taunted my sister and got rapped ended up hangin herself at a park around the corner from where my mom lives this is all too scary and close for comfort it is unfortunate to hear these gut wrenching stories. And thank you 10 times for purchasing my book much love and respect!!

      smiels :)

You have a great talent for addressing the darkest and solitude corners of our fears! As a parent all I can say is "This scares the hell out of me"! The fear that my child could be in so much pain, so helpless that they fall into this as a form of acceptance or escape! You are a deep soul who has loved hard and endured much... just ordered your book too! Can't wait to read it:)

I was thinking..(watch out)... that with such beautiful thoughts and wise words, that much like this innocent lost soul, our words, your words, could bleed beyond the hubs, and yes, like your wonderful books, but more, as plays. Shakespeare did it. He immersed us. Took us to the deepest places of our hearts. These precious words could be a play. Soft lights, a majestic set, tearful music, and Bella's words. I see it. It needs to be built. It needs to be said....
