Keyword Research Tools

Adwords Keyword Planner: Helps in knowing the number of times a keyword or phrase is searched for in a month (on average)

Google Search : Gives the results for a keyword or phrase. You are able to know how competitive your keyword is. If there are few results and many searches, you are likely to be successful with your keyword.

Google trends : Will help you see how the keyword has performed over a longer period of time.

Google Analytics : After you have published your content, use this tool to monitor how well it is performing.

Topics to Write About

Good writing topics are topics with a reasonable demand within a certain niche. However, interest in some niches is trending downwards and may eventually dry out. How then does one choose good topics to write about that will generate enough sustained traffic? A factor that is sometimes lost when doing keyword research is the performance trend over a long period of time.

----------------------------------------------

What is your writing strategy for the year?

  • Ever-green topics : Some writers only write ever green topics in order to have constant traffic to their content. This is the recommended strategy because when you write seasonal topics, there tends to be wild fluctuations with your traffic.
  • Seasonal topics : But some seasonal topics are very rewarding and another strategy is to mix seasonal and ever-green topics so as to take advantage of both.
  • Hybrid : The strategy of mixing seasonal and ever-green topics can be effectively utilised if the seasonal topics can be spread out well through out the year. By looking for seasonal topics on a monthly basis, one can sustain the traffic levels for a whole year without seeing the fluctuations associated with seasonal topics.

What topics to write about?

The best way to start is to look at general categories of topics and move on from there. General categories for January include but are not limited to:

  • Public holidays
  • Anniversaries
  • Sports events
  • Weather

Let us look at January holidays as a general category for topics to write content for. The first step is to list down the holidays that fall on this month and research on the number of searches they get. Once you know the number of searches performed, you do a quick Google search to see the number of result each keyword will give you.

Note, this is just the beginning and the aim is identify some good keywords for further exploration. These are seed keywords that are meant to generate even more appropriate keywords. The table below lists the major US January holidays and the kinds of results they give.

Trend for the keyword 'New Year's Day
Trend for the keyword 'New Year's Day

From the table above, it is clear that some keywords perform better than others. If we explore the keyword 'New Year's Day' , we see a sharp increase in searches in January which dissipates by the beginning of February.

Does this mean it is not a good keyword to write about? Not necessarily because as stated earlier, these are just seed keywords. We will now need to drill further to see the keywords that are generated from this seed and try and find under-served keywords.

Search Versus Result Ratio

You may have noticed from the table above that I have introduced a new metric called the Search/ Results ratio. This metric is a measure of to what extent a keyword is under-served. It gives a feel of the likelihood of success if you use the particular keyword as opposed to another. There are other factors in play such as the competing websites and therefore it is just a starting point. Use the following formula to calculate the ratio:

SR Ratio = ( No. of searches/ No. of results) x 100

The table has been sorted and the first keyword has the highest ratio. You can see that the seed word "New year's Day" has yielded more keywords for you to explore. You can dig even deeper for more ideas by researching the keywords in the table, but I will stop there.

Let us now look at another seed keyword from the first table above and see what subsequent keyword ideas are generated.

Epiphany

This January holiday yields a number of keyword ideas that are worth exploration. The word "Epiphany" is searched over 200,000 times in January alone. These searches then level off to 100,000 per month for the remaining months of the year.

According to the Search/ Results ratio, three keywords appear to be worthy of consideration:

  • Epiphany synonym
  • Epiphany
  • Epiphany Catholic school

I must emphasise once again that these are only a guide on the direction to take and a further drill down can yield even better keywords. You should also run the keywords through Google Trends to see their performance over a long period of time. This will tell you if the keyword has been trending downwards or upwards over the years. This will prevent you from choosing writing topics that contain keywords that will eventually die off.

Other Topics to Write About

The topics to write about in January are many and the ones I have highlighted are just the tip of the iceberg. January is the month when Martin Luther King Junior is remembered and you might want to explore keywords that show up when you research the name.

There is also the Chinese New Year which is celebrated in the month of January, not forgetting that 2014 is the Chinese Year of the Horse.

Another topic to explore is the Centenary of World War 1. This will be the remembrance of the beginning of World War 1 in 1914. When you look at the keyword in Google Trends, you will notice a sharp increase in the searches beginning in October 2013. This shows an upward trend in searches with the projections indicating that this will continue in the years ahead.

The FIFA WORLD CUP 2014 in Brazil will also generate a lot of interest with many searches being performed as the build-up to the games continues.

LAST WORD

Keyword research is a time consuming exercise that requires patience and perseverance. The benefit of researching the topics you are writing about is that you gain confidence that the content will have an audience. Keyword research also overcomes writer's block because at every turn you are presented with so many alternatives that you are spoilt for choice.
