What are Google Ebooks?

Updated on December 6, 2010

What are Google Ebooks?

The Google Ebooks Store is a new service and online store from Google that offers readers free and cheap ebooks that will be readable on most portable electronic devices.  Google's ebooks are published in both the open source ePub format (used by the Sony Reader and Barnes and Noble Nook) and in PDF.  This means that most smart phones and tablet PCs will have the capability of reading book and helps eliminate fears of vendor lock-in that come with closed source ebook marketplaces such as the Amazon Kindle market.

What Devices Do Google Ebooks Work On?

You can read Google Ebooks on a wide variety of mobile devices. Of these, some popular options are:

  • Android Phones
  • iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch
  • And web browser with PDF capabilities
  • Sony Reader
  • Barnes and Noble Nook

And what's really great is that you can seamless switch your reading between these devices because the books sync between the various formats/editions.  The only device that they don't work on is the Amazon Kindle which is really a bit of a shame, but there's not much you can do when a device is locked down to that extent.

Google Ebooks For Publishers and Authors

This works out great for publishers and small book retailers as they can now partner with Google to share their books online and receive a greater cut of the earnings from their sales. Plus, Google Ebook Store is a great opportunity for self publishers to publish their books for free and get them indexed in the Google Book search engine where they can be discovered more readily by new readers.

What's really handy is that you don't need an ISBN to submit your work.  If you don't have one, Google has their own IDs that they will assign to your book for free, which is really nice and it saves a bit of money if you're not interested in selling your book elsewhere.

A Poem About The Google Ebook Marketplace

Even poets and authors are getting excited about the new Google Ebook Store. Here's a humorous poem someone sent me about it from the Really Good Poetry blog.
