Graduation Day - a poem

Updated on May 27, 2013

The clouds today

Have a billowing aspect

In their sky-blue crown -

The reminder of a dream

In their shimmering sails.

And a country of swallows brings to mind

The miracle of a winged language -

An accomplishment

Of translating

Feathers to flight.

Thank you so much for that! Congratulations to your son ~ I know he will feel just as elated as I did on that wondrous day! :)

My youngest is getting ready to graduate from Appalachian State University in December so I naturally gravitated toward this one.

And how I am so glad that I did. This poem is a masterpiece and captures this glorious occasion so beautifully. V+++

      Thank You,

      Kim

      There's a lot here, tracy. I second eilander's motion.

Thanks so much, eilander. I have never since experienced a day quite like graduation day! The phrase "walking on air" was surely coined by a graduate on that special day.

The greatest feat of poetry s capturing a seemingly monotonous or very regular, plain facet of life, and revealing the true beauty within it. I re-discovered that beauty of graduation day in your poem.

      well done

tracy - I hear a lot of people claiming they do not want to attend their own graduation and I think that it is a mistake. People should mark this wonderful day, and celebrate the ritual that comes with their accomplishment.
