Great Summer 2014 Beach Reads

Updated on June 17, 2014

Reading Languidly On The Beach

"Here I've written a short list of newly published book recommendations for any reader's convenience if they're in search of a summer beach read."

You've been hectically packing up for the family summer trip...

You've been hectically packing up for the family summer trip to the resort or the seashore or your little family cabin up in the north woods. Sound familiar? It's been frustrating because you've had to pack up all your kids' stuff and make all the travel plans. Your kids packed all of the most impractical clothing when you glanced through their efforts to pack and instead of wasting time trying to tell them the best clothing they should pack you took it into your own hands to throw their bags together with things that make sense so you don't have to purchase them a two hundred dollar tourist destination hoodie when they complain that they're freezing and forgot to pack any long sleeve shirts. Amidst the chaos of packing and planning you've just realized you forgot to pick up a book for yourself to read on the beach while you spend a long weekend relaxing away from all the hustle and bustle. You always bring along something to read because reading on the beach allows you to completely let yourself fall into books as your mind is quieted, your stress level is low, and you can easily imagine the places and scenarios in your book. You've been meaning to go to the book store to browse, but you feel like you don't have the time now to waste perusing shelves before you go on your trip. You need something quick and efficient to pick up in a rush. Here I've written a short list of newly published book recommendations for any reader's convenience if they're in search of a summer beach read. I've chosen a book for several popular genres for your consideration.

If Teen Fiction Is Your Thing...

Give "City of Heavenly Fire: The Mortal Instruments" a chance. If you've never read the series you may want to start with the first book in the series: "City of Bones" by the bestselling author Cassandra Clare. Shadowhunters and Demons battle in this conclusion to "The Mortal Instruments Series".

If Mystery Is Your Thing...

Find a copy of "All Day And All Night". This is a book in the Ellie Hatcher mystery series. A murder takes place and it could be connected to a serial killer. If Fantasy Is Your Thing...

Read J.R.R Tolkein's translation of "Beowulf". "Beowulf" greatly inspired him to write many of the books and stories he had written. This translation of "Beowulf" also has J.R.R. Maybe look into "China Dolls". Give "Just One Thing" by Holly Jacobs a read. If Non Fiction Is Your Thing...

Perhaps "Good Hunting: An American Spymaster's Story" will quench your reading thirst. The book is about Jack Devine who was the mind behind Charlie Wilson's War. This is his memoir of his time spent in the CIA for over thirty years. If you like history or spy stories on tv or from books this may interest you if you want to know what it's like to work for the CIA.
