Good Books for Toddlers

Updated on March 13, 2011

Toddler books should be a little more complicated than baby books. The colors don't have to have as much contrast because toddlers see better than babies. The pictures can also be a little more complicated for the same reason. The books can be slightly longer because of a toddler's increased attention span. However, to keep a toddler's attention, great toddler books don't have too much text and have plenty of things for the child to look at while the book is being read.

Big Dog and Little Dog Going for a Walk

This great toddler book is easy for young children to understand and has very cute pictures. Toddlers can point to the dogs easily and look at the dogs walking while the book is being read to them. The length of the text portions are long enough to create a story for toddlers but not so long that they will get bored with it and not want to sit still long enough to hear it.

Moo Baa La La La

This adorable book is funny to toddlers and it's easy for toddlers to participate in it. With short text that includes rhymes and simple concepts, pre-schoolers and even younger kids can participate by making the animal sounds along with the reader. It's a good toddler book that is a great length for a nighttime read.

Goodnight Moon

Goodnight Moon is one of the all-time classic books for toddlers. While kids of all ages seem to like it, it is the perfect length, subject matter and illustrations for toddlers. They are old enough to understand the simple story line and can point to the various items in the rooms featured in the book. The colors are bright and cheery while the subdued language and the topic of saying good night makes it a perfect bedtime story for toddlers.

Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book)

The touch and feel version of Pat the Bunny is a fun and engaging book for toddlers that lets young kids feel various textures while listening to the words being read. The tactile aspect of the book draws kids into the book and keeps their attention through the simple story line.

My Big Animal Book

My Big Animal Book is a good toddler book for its size, its pictures and its variety of animals. All young kids love animals, and this book has so many animals to look at that toddlers can look at them again and again and still have more that they want to see. An adult can read the animal mane that is under each animal, and eventually toddlers do memorize many of them. It's a fun teaching tool for parents who ask their children about each picture and are ready with a prompt. Even very young toddlers will remember the names of their favorites.

The book is large in size, but since it's a board book it's still easy for toddlers to hold. They can spend time alone looking at the pictures or they can read it with an adult.

Thanks, I was looking for toddler books. Little J5(Joseph the fifth) loves the farm book I bought him. He's two and loves the moos & baas!
