Green (A Short Poem for Poetry Month)

Updated on October 26, 2016

John has been writing poetry since his school days. He was awarded "Poet of the Year 2014" Hubby Awards and has had two poems become songs.

April, Poetry Month

As April is "National Poetry Month" in America and Hub Pages and many of the hubbers I know are from there I decided to join in. I hope you don't mind. I probably won't be publishing a poem every day but this is my second poetry hub so far for the month. I saw a suggestion on another site to select a colour and write a poem describing it through the use of all senses.This is my attempt to do that.

Freshly mowed grass

"Green"

The pleasant musty smell

Of fresh cut grass.

The unmistakable flavour

Of brussel sprouts.

Successfully granted residency

A green card.

The furry mould that grows

On food left too long.

People's perception

Of inexperience.

The beautiful fragrant scent

Of a garden in bloom.

The wind rustling the leaves

Caresses my ears.

The tingly feeling you get

When holding a frog.

Granny Smith Apples
Granny Smith Apples | Source

The satisfying "crunch!" of teeth

On a Granny Smith apple.

Unfounded fears revealed

A green tree snake.

The beautiful sight to behold

Of distant rolling hills.

Joy at Christmas

Finding the perfect tree.

The Perfect Tree
The Perfect Tree | Source

The pain of barbed rose stems

That prick your fingers.

The frustrated angry feelings

Of jealousy and envy.

The amature golfer's delight

One shot from the tee.

~~~Green~~~
      Thank you Charito, green is my favourite colour at the moment. I too love leafy green vegetables an a green landscape. Glad you enjoyed this hub.
      I actually love green landscapes, John.
      Green also seems to be a healthy color. Aside from eating leafy vegetables, I look at anything green when my eyes are tired.
      Nice poem and pictures!
      Good to see you back Kim, sorry to hear about the sudden changes in your life especially your bf going with the esential garden tools. Weed eater'so can take a bit of getting used to but you will be pleased you have it. So glad you like this poem, it makes me happy when anything I write can cheer you up or inspire someone. Writing is good therapy too. I promise to keep being me and always here if you need a shoulder...just an email away. Have a nice weekend.
      Up and shared my friend. I love this poem. Life has taken on many changes. I am now living alone. The bf is gone along with tools and apparatus needed to keep the green looking good. I still have my lawnmower. And of yesterday I received an early Mother's Day gift: a weedeater. After several tutorials, my oldest pronounced me competent to use this green eating machine.
      Thank you for being you.
      Hey Bob, thanks for quite a different response, a few other readers said they don't like to touch frogs but other than that you have been the first to find most of these unpleasant. I admit I am not a real Brussels sprouts fan, and don't embrace jealousy and envy .. So yeah. Anyway at least you found enough here to be worth a vote up. That's what counts.
    • no body profile image
      The poem was not what I was expecting at all. In so many lines the green was things I didn't like. So my reaction was different than I was prepared for. I know that all those unpleasant things about green is all life too, (like mold) but it made me see that what is good is not always pleasant. Voted up. Bob.
      What better celebration of green for April, Spring, and poetry month than a verdant feast for the senses? My two favorite parts were-
      The unmistakable flavour
      Of brussel sprouts.
      and
      The tingly feeling you get
      When holding a frog.
      Your poem made me happy!
      Hi John. I had almost forgotten about April and National Poetry Month. Your opening photo certainly awakens the senses to “green” and what spring and summer means to us all. Yet your imaginative poem takes us beyond that reference, in touch, taste, scents, feelings, how we “hear the green” in the leaves that rustle in the trees; and much more. This is so well done, John. I just love it. Voted up and shared. Happy Easter.
      Hi Ann, glad you had fun with this poem...talking to yourself in the middle of the night though, I wasn't expecting that effect :)
    • annart profile image
      This is great fun; just the thing to make me want to dash outside and look at all the green things because it's Spring! I won't because it's pitch-black and I'd just fall over the green garden chairs.
      Wonderful poem; made me smile. You came up with all sorts of definitions. I was saying 'oh yes!' to many of them. Not much that gets me talking to myself late in the evening - or is that just madness?
      I'm still trying to finish one poem for this poetry month; too much going on! Might use the colour idea too.
