Haiku: Seasonal Delights

Updated on July 26, 2017
cat on a soapbox profile image

Catherine has loved nature and animals since childhood and advocates for sustainability and respect for all living things.

The seasons bring with them the repetition of natural cycles and the memories we create around them. How divine to remember the tradition of flying kites on a blustery March day with the invigorating gusts of chilled air, the wispy white clouds, and incredibly blue sky. Think of the salty sea air, the weight of the warm sand on your toes, and the cry of seagulls above the crashing waves. Hear the sounds of the crunchy leaves underfoot and the smell of the rain mixed with smoke from the chimney. Remember the beloved fragrance of winter evergreens and the magical twinkle of distant lights. The seasons evoke sensorial memories that recreate pictures in our minds, time spent with loved ones, traditions shared, and visits to our favorite places. The haiku are inspired from my own recollections. I hope you enjoy them!

Boughs of red berries

Garlands of fragrant cedar.

No more is needed.

________

Tilting and dipping

A kite pulls across the sky.

Wind calligraphy!

________

The cry of seagulls

In a symphony of waves.

Free beach concerto.

_______

Nutmeg and allspice.

Warmed brandy by fire's light.

Tradition lingers.

      I looooove this one. :-)

      My favorite:

      "The cry of seagulls

      In a symphony of waves.

      Free beach concerto!"

Seagulls abound here and that is what they sound like -- when they're not diving into the ocean like Kamikaze pilots for fish. Beautiful!

      Perspycacious-

I appreciate your kind comments and thank you for noticing that I overlooked that 7th syllable. I must have hurried through my edits! I always look forward to your new haiku.

Oops! Should have written "How to be a Mother, Father, Child".

Very nice each verse. Suggestion: "PeekING from snow-laden boughs" gives the added 7th syllable. Thanks for commenting on my latest. I found each of these beautiful. I also liked poetvix' non-Haiku, but great poem with included acrostics on

      "Mothers,Fathers, Children" (and parents.)

Russ is right, to read haiku out loud just fills the sir with the essence of it. I love the symphony of waves, a beautiful expression.

Hi, Russ. Thank you for your kind words of support. You are right about the spontaneous creativity. I love walking in the outdoors and photographing the beauty there. My inspiration comes in waves, so I often am inactive for extended periods. Both you and Larry (Maven 101) have been great sources of encouragement, and I appreciate your thoughtfulness in introducing me to the haiku writers here on HP. I also enjoy discovering those that share our interests.

Cat, once again, lovely! I really love your work. I find that the best way to experience poetry and especially haiku is to read it slowly and out loud. I have read yours out loud a couple of times and love the images it portrays, and sense without doubt that these appeared instinctively to you. After voting this up, awesome and beautiful, I am going to write to some fellow hubbers who enjoy haiku and steer them to these treats.

Hi, Flora. I'm glad you like the image of music. I was inspired by relaxing on the sand with my eyes closed and taking in all of the summer sounds. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your comments.
