Four Elements Haiku

Updated on October 30, 2014

The four elements, earth, air, fire, and water, have been a source of fascination and a basis for understanding nature since ancient Greek times. They have inspired many works of fiction, like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic series. For me, they inspired these haiku. In these haiku, I try to show different aspects of each element, showing the subtle nuances each one has, and how each element affects the world around it.

Earth

The Sapling

Emerging branches
Clawing toward a blue sky
Grasping for heaven

Flower Merchants

Bright petaled merchants
Hawking their sweet nectar to
Buzzing golden bees

Soil

Dirt warmed by the sun
Dark and loamy, but homey
To small pink earthworms

Days Gone By

Old man boulder sits
Remembers younger days when
He was a mountain

Grass Soldiers

The blades of grass stand
Saluting their sergeant sun
Then sway in the wind

Air

Autumn

Gently flowing breeze
Lightly brushing falling leaves
Changing and cleansing

Terror

Fearsome tornado
Whirling dervish warrior
Landing for battle

Joy

Racing with horses
Laughing freely as it flies
Wild carefree wind

Hidden Depths

Marshmallow outside
A raging tempest inside
Clouds have hidden depths

Strength

The wind lifts it all
From song bites to eagle wings
And carries them home

Fire

Mother

Mother firelight
Brings her glow to young campers
Keeps her children warm

Mischief

The rambunctious flame
Dances off his candle post
To greet the curtains

Hunger

Gluttonous fire
Gorging itself on fresh wood
Always wanting more

Fire-dancer

A passionate dance
Ever the proud performer
Flame sways, seductive

Duality

Beauty and danger
Light and warmth and destruction
It's fire's nature

Water

Naivety

Brave little raindrop
Wants to see the outside world
Takes a leap of faith

Muddled

A puddle muddles
In thought about how he got
To spill on the ground

Gossip

The gossiping brook
Bubbles and Babbles her way
To chat with the stream

Wanderer

River meanders
Through meadows and tall mountains
Looking for a home

Mystery

The unknown deep sea
Dark caverns that hide secrets
Mysteries abound

I loved these. My favorite was the one about the boulder remembering when it was a mountain. Thanks for sharing these with us.
