Friendship Begins - a haiku. What is a true Friend?
Friendship begins with
a smile, a handshake, a drink
something clicks within.
Friendship can begin
any age with any one
when we are open
When Friendships begin
life is more joyful and fun
sharing and laughter
When Friendship begins
sometimes it blooms into love
Lovers can stay friends
When friendships begin
I wonder, will my heart break
If I let you in
If a Friendship ends
memories only remain
no regrets, tears, pain
Making friends as we age can become more challenging and certainly, in my experience friendships ebb and flow as our circumstances and families change. I am fortunate that, amongst my friends, I have a wonderful girfriend whom I have known since I was nineteen. She and I are now both in our fifties, live in two separate countries and yet when we meet it is as if no time has passed whatsoever.
I have met friends who started as work colleagues, through my children, in one case by answering an ad in a local paper from a woman, also from the UK, looking for someone to go to the movies with - her husband didn't like the same type of films and, more recently, through facebook.
There are friends who no longer appear in my life but who I still think about ,whose lives are now so different from my own. In the last few years I have met and made some wonderful women friends in Canada, it took a few years to "get it" - social interactions here are different and the cues are not quite so obvious.
In my professional life I meet and counsel women who do not have any friends or who have been unlucky to have had friendship experiences that betrayed them, making them less trustful.
For me true friends are as important as family - maybe because I have a small family and, we are lucky to be able to choose our friends - although I often find they choose me:-)
I think being the friend you would like to have is the most important aspect of any relationship - it takes work, practice and sometimes it can be heartbreaking but, it's worth it. One friend, one true friend in the world, is worth more than all the gold.
