He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother - A Sister's Love

Updated on June 2, 2013

He wasn’t old enough to talk

But big enough to almost walk,

The day they brought me home.

Eleven months, he beat me by

Still, older brother, you can’t deny!

I skipped the crawling and started to run

To catch up to what my brother had done.

By his side, I had to be

He just meant the world to me!

He might just be my brother

But, oh he’s so much more.

Everything about him

I simply just adore.

Never treated me like an annoyance

Always let me tag along

The bond we were creating

Would last us all life long.

If he climbed a tree, I climbed it too

Everything my brother did, I would try to do!

I was his little sidekick, we laughed so hard we cried

Didn’t care where he was going, I was going by his side!

His last piece of Fruit Stripe gum, he gifted it to me!

I’ve never known another who acted more unselfishly!

If someone ever looked at me in an unflattering kind of way.

My brother quickly took care of businesses and made everything okay.

We grew up doing everything, together all the time

We told each other secrets and we were partners in crime.

He might have grown up and left the house

To go and save the world.

This will not be so hard for him

He saved this little girl!

Everything about who I am, is changed because of him

Every day was bright and sunny, never was it dim.

Even when things were rough he kept me unaware.

I find peace in each and every day, knowing forever he’ll be there!

My Big Brother, Derek

All I ever talk about to my brother is HubPages... so he figured to get me to listen to him, he'd have to join...Raven765 ... My Gemini Twin! (Unlike me, he's quite normal)... Stop by and say Hi, if you get a chance! :-)

A little update: The poor sap is working diligently to get his first hub to pass the QAP, 3rd attempt as we speak... it was there, now it's gone :-( ... In an attempt to upload a video he found himself graced with a virus... so he'll be as busy as a beaver today!

Hey shan girl! Thank you! 'Potty Knuckles', ha ha... I have to say, I've never heard that one. Trust me, one brother loved me to pieces and the other just beat me up all the time, I know :D

...and I didn't mean to leave you hanging, if I did, last night... I had every distraction possible... but I'll find you today :D Any new hubs in the making?

This is very touching, Cat. Too bad all siblings don't get along. My oldest are 20 mos apart, but they are busy calling eachother Potty Knuckles and Butt Face right now. . .guess I better go referee that fight. *sigh*

Aww, thank you! I couldn't have imagined my childhood with my brother(s)... well one beat me up and the other one loved me :-)

Back in those days, siblings actually played together... I try to get my kids, but different sexes and too big of an age difference.

I actually have a memory of him giving me his only piece of Fruit Stripe gum... funny. I'm a child of the 80's, but the 70's weren't very far behind :-)

Thank you... so much and I think this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship :-)

      Thanks again,

      Ed,

Aw, that's beautiful... "bonds that require little maintanance"... isn't that the truth. Love should not be judgemental, but I see it time and time again, but a sibling's love is unconditional... even despite some hair pulling. :-)

I'm sorry you've lost two brothers and I'm sure it's been hard... I can tell that when you love, you love deep. I'm sure they have contributed to who you are... you are a man of many levels, depth and character.

Thanks Ed... big hugs for you!

Cat , There is no finer love than that of brothers and sisters ! Its funny , there are bonds in life that require little maintanance, where the deepest secrets , the most honest hearts and the best connections are made time after time , I came from a large family and I swear that telepathy is part of sibling communications!....Your brother sounds just as cool as you are ! I have lost two brothers in this life and each one remains yet a huge part of who I am !.......Big hugs for you both !.....Ed

      CloudExplorer,

Aw, thank you so much for your kind words! Egypt, huh? Sounds like he’s got some hub writing material right there, waiting for him when he’s settled.

It’s funny; I had one brother that used to, as you say, “kick my ass” all the time and another that all but kissed it. I think it was the age difference; this brother and I aren’t even a year apart. The other was almost 2 years older than me… I was probably just too young and annoying for his liking. We change as we grow though don’t we… we learn to appreciate family, love and life a little more.

Thank you again for your absolutely generous words, I truly appreciate how gracious you are, I’m not sure I’m all that talented, but I am inspired, inspired by moments and inspired to share… you know what I mean? Whatever strikes you at the time? I’m just grateful it is received so well! I definitely owe your pages a visit… I don’t even know all of what you have to offer, but what I do know, I’m impressed with. Thanks again… and I think I’ve got a sense to work on! :-)

Thank you! That’s funny… I don’t think I made the connection until now, and I’m running the risk of my brother catching me now that he will be roaming this pages, but my brother calls me all the time and he’s worse than a woman; I can’t get him off the phone… sometimes I “don’t hear it ring” :-) Too funny! Thanks for stopping by!

I'm so happy that I chose to follow your hubs Cat, wow! you have quite the sense of humor and yup I also told my brother to give hubpages a try, and he's been plugging away as well. He stopped at 6 hubs though and mainly because he had to move from Egypt back here to the United States.

I loved you poem here, it was filled with sibling rivalry towards the start that lead to brotherly and sisterly love that's unmatched, and again I can relate to such a story between me and my bro, because he use to kick my ass when I was a little whipper snapper :) Then as the years progressed we became inseparable as well.

Wow its awesome to get to see how other folks think about their life and how they manage to write so elegantly about it in such creative ways. You my friend are a true poet, and I will continue to read more of your hubs for sure.

Bravo on doing such a awesome job here, and 5 thumbs up because you appealed to all of my six senses :)

      Leslie,

Ha ha ha... yes, I always tell my kids, in an attempt to get them to be nicer to each other and share, about how selfless their Uncle Derek was... "even giving me his last piece of Fruit Stipe gum". (I honestly have a memory of that because I remembered thinking as he gave it to me, "I wouldn't have given up my last piece" ...that's how I knew he was special :-)

Yes, I particularly love him so much because he laughs at all my jokes... and he would do anything to keep me safe, 'course, he probably developed that habit because my oldest brother used to beat the snot out of me all the time... one that beat me up and the other one laughed at me... and you wonder why I have problems? :-)

      Thanks Leslie... you're the best!

Nooooooo! Whatta ya mean? I know I haven't seen ya in a few days... are you writing somewhere? Is everything okay with you? Oh my goodness, I can't lose my Leslie, no way! Let me know, FB if you have to.

Which 'set' of lungs are you referring to? lol lol

and it's funny that you mention the approaching weather because I am looking all of the time out and over my lake here (primarily to see if you're rowing your boat over to see me , lol) and right across the lake is Erie, Penn. which is roughly 47 miles and it's very dark and ominious on the other side other than the rainbow which has a striking resemblance to your eyes, my sweet.

Off for a walk now and then perhaps a cat-nap before the big Leaf playoff game which goes right into my night shift start at work so I might as well get some rest now - and did I say a cat-nap - how can a hot blooded Canadian actually try to nap when my Cat on a hot tin roof is around , lol

Afternoon, my handsome little Colin friend! :-)

Well if you being a spoiled only child has made you the way you are then, what's my excuse? Hehehe.

I made sure to get a good morning dose of me Colin and it got me through my errands... with a big ol' smile... I need to head back your way for my second wind!

I'm going to have to investigate this Liona Boyd as she seems to be some competition... and has a set of lungs? Oh no!

'Course I remember that song... and she wrote it for me about my greatest friend Colin! :-)

The thunder is rolling in Colin... I hope you're luckier over there on that side of the lake, but remember this, just because it's raining, doesn't mean the sun has left you!

Now, I've got a sudden urge to get the Cher on :-)

Right back at ya baby cakes!

I tell ya one thing that dude Derek has gotta be the luckiest brother in the entire free world. I was an only child and spoiled rotten at that which is why I am who I am , lol.

Well I popped by to get my daily Cat fix (you are beyond catnip to me - you are essential to my breathing) so here I am while having my nice cuppa of mint green tea and listening to some lovely classical guitar music by Liona Boyd (and she's hot like you Cat)

Both cats are enjoying their fresh air on a nice summer's day in early May and the rain has held off for the most part.

You will always have to remember Colin for one thing - his unconditional love for his cats and how he was a good man when it came to looking after them.

It's so nice to hear about your family - your lovely and talented daughter and now your brother ......and remember that song by Barbara Striesand - People - "people who need people are the luckiest people in the world."

Well says - Sonny Colin to his Cher Cat - "I've got you babe!"

Sending you a loving high five from 2 hands and four paws at lake erie time 3:24pm

      RealityTalk,

Thank you for sharing what you're going through and have been through! I'm sorry to hear about your father and I hope you're doing well. How lucky you are to have a mother in such good health as she will be needed so long as she has children :-)

I guess I'm fortuante myself, my brothers and I have only recently entered our thirties and our healths have not really been issues, knock on wood. The brother I wrote about is in the military and when he goes overseas in hostile territories, I worry terribly about him; dread the phone ringing. I was very close with one and moderately close with the other brother. I watch my son and daughter now... 4 years apart and opposite sexes; they have nothing in common except meal time! :-) I so desperately want them to have what my brothers' and I had, but I guess you can't force a bond. Like you, I try to instill it's importance... I hope it will come one day, I think it will, for both our families.

You are lucky to have had such a big family and I'll be thinking of your brother, my heart is with you and yours! Thanks again for sharing and stopping by... I know I'm due your way too!

I like the poem and the tribute to sibling love. I have 4 brothers and 2 sisters. I am now 56 years old. My oldest brother will turn 60 this year. He went through a heart transplant 6 years ago. He jokingly would say, I have 5 brothers as a result of his new heart.

I lost my father last year. My mother is 80 but looks and is in health as if 65 fortunately.

I have grown ever more appreciative of being born into a large family. Especially since my eldest sibling contracted the affliction that necessitated his heart transplant. The affliction that he still suffers. I appreciate everyday my family is in my world.

I have 3 minor children of my own. Separated by 3 and 4 years; 7 between the oldest and the youngest. And there is not a day that goes by that I do not impress on them how important they are to each other. Sometimes they get it. Sometimes they don't. But I think they get it more and more as they grow older.

      Family is good.

Well, I finally learned how to comment on the hubs...sorry for the delay! First of all, I must agree with all of the previous comments. So many people do not cherish what they have at times and with my family in WV, and Cat's...well 3 states away we still try to balance it out. I am attempting my first hub AGAIN for the third time now. I think this one may pass, I added a video clip. Actually it was a perfect clip to come across, fits my hub PERFECT! Yeah, I would have to admit that Bart and Lisa fighting, and him choking Lisa would probably fit Cat and our older brother the most lol! Well, thanks again for the tribute, and I LOVE the second song you added, thanks! Also, I must add that I am definitely far from perfect, and far from as noble as everyone is making it sound...I guess it is about loving and cherishing what you have, and keeping your priorities straight. Wish it was that easy for more people. Thanks again, talk to you soon! Love, your Bro...

I began to weep as soon as I started reading. I am 1 year older than my sister, Cathy 'Cat", and I lost her to meningitis a few months ago. Your tribute sounded exactly like me and her. Cherish your brother...your family. And never take for granted your time with them.

      whonu,

Thank you! I have two older brothers... that's it, no sisters. I always begged my parents to adopt a sister for me :-) But I was very fortunate to have what I did! Thanks again!

A sweet tribute to a brother, and as I have two sisters, I can identify. Thanks for sharing. whonu
